USA Today Owner Gannett Splits Off Publishing From TV

Gannett Co., the owner of USA Today, will split into two publicly traded companies, one focused on broadcasting and digital businesses and the other on publishing, it said today, following the trend that has swept the media business.

Signaling its interest in digital investment, the company also agreed to buy the 73% interest it doesn’t already own in Classified Ventures, which owns Cars.com, for $1.8 billion in cash, it said in a statement today. Cars.com, which was started in 1998, lets users check prices, compare models and read reviews of auto dealers.

The publishing business will be separated through a tax-free distribution of assets to shareholders. The split comes after similar moves by News Corp., Time Warner and Tribune Co., all of which wanted to cleave stronger entertainment businesses from newspapers or magazines facing long-term problems.

Tale of Two Subscription Services: Dollar Shave Club and HelloFlo

It’s only natural to compare HelloFlo, the subscription feminine products business that burst on the scene in the past year with two mega-hit videos, to Dollar Shave Club. The latter made a similar entry in 2012 selling razors.

But besides funny, risqu videos and subscription e-commerce, the two are as different as Venus and Mars, including in one very key respect their relationship with the established heavyweight in their respective categories, Procter & Gamble Co.

HelloFlo is a bootstrap startup financed by its founder, who’s forged an alliance with P&G, even as venture-capital-backed Dollar Shave Club wages a war aimed at taking a big slice out of P&G’s Gillette business.

If the Chinese Communist Party Is Using Online Video, Shouldn't You?

When you think of the People’s Liberation Army, you probably don’t think of line dancing. But the Chinese military’s latest online recruiting video makes a soldier’s life look more fun than the macarena.

The brief spot, posted last week on the website of the Ministry of National Defense and going viral, features tanks and fighter jets, as well as soldiers dancing in rows to a quirky hit tune by the Chopsticks Brothers called “Little Apple.” Its lyrics include, “You are my little dear little apple/I can never stop loving you.”

It’s the latest of several Chinese official videos to spread online (one was a “Top Gun”-themed military recruitment video, and another was an homage to the Communist Party. See below.)
