Video Game Console Sales Exceed Expectations at GameStop


GameStop Corp., the video-game chain that said this week its CEO had surgery for brain cancer, surged the most in a year after reporting profit that beat estimates as consumers bought new players and software.

Net income more than doubled to $24.6 million, or 22 cents a share, from a year arlier, GameStopsaid in a statement yesterday. Analysts on average predicted 18 cents, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Consumers are upgrading to the new generation of game players, Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One, and buying new titles with snappier graphics. Sony said last week that worldwide sales of the PS4 have exceeded 10 million units, a record for its PlayStation devices.

McDonald's Names Andres to Take Over U.S. Division as President


McDonald’s Corp. said long-time restaurant executive Mike Andres will take over as president of the chain’s U.S. operations as Jeff Stratton retires amid increased domestic competition.

Mr. Stratton, 58, will retire on Oct. 15 after 41 years with the brand, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company said today in a statement. Mr. Andres, 56, has worked in multiple roles at McDonald’s, including leading its central U.S. unit and the company’s former Boston Market subsidiary. He has been chief executive officer of Logan’s Roadhouse Inc. since early last year.

This is the second senior executive announcement from McDonald’s this week, after it named Julia Vander Ploeg as its first VP of digital in the U.S. as part of its continuing efforts to strengthen its digital presence.
