Posted in: UncategorizedFrom Silicon Valley, Media Startup Ozy.com Vies for Adland's Attention
Posted in: UncategorizedAlmost every Thursday, Carlos Watson, the former MSNBC anchor who last year co-founded the news site Ozy.com with money from Silicon Valley elite, boards a transcontinental flight in San Francisco bound for New York, where he’ll rise early on Friday to appear on CNN’s morning show “New Day.” He usually spends the rest of the day dashing around New York — carry-on bag in tow — going to meetings, lunches and coffee dates with a coterie of advertising and agency execs, journalists and others. That night, it’s back to the Bay Area, where, in Mountain View, Ozy is headquartered.
It is about as exhausting as it sounds, Mr. Watson said. But his efforts appear to be making some headway for Ozy, which marks its first anniversary next month.
The site has entered into a content partnership with CNN that promises to raise its profile; it has hired people from prominent media companies, including, recently, Politico Chief Technology Officer Ryan Mannion; and, on Sept. 12, the site plans to introduce advertising for the first time. Deutsche Bank, Emirates airline, Hyatt’s Andaz boutique hotel brand, Lufthansa, John Varvatos and Visa are among the advertisers that will begin running on the site, according to an Ozy spokeswoman.

10 Brands That Got Creative With the Ice Bucket Challenge Without Calling on the CEO
Posted in: Uncategorized
You’ve seen the videos in your social feeds every day for a month. The Ice Bucket Challenge has raised millions for the ALS Association and is quite possibly the most successful viral charity drive of all time.
Your friends have done it, your family has done it, celebrities have done it, maybe you’ve even done it. And of course, brands have been doing it. It’s easy to be cynical about the latter. After all, anything that becomes this popular in our culture is destined for rampant trolling. And it is odd when brands try to make it about them.
I gotta hand it to the brands on this list, though. They didn’t just toss the bucket over to the C-suite, as hundreds have done. They tried to stay in character. They tried to suspend our disbelief (that corporations are evil, faceless entities with no soul).
That said, I’d hate to be at the meetings at Progressive where they’re deciding if they should douse Flo.
Below, check out 10 brands who at least got a little creative with it.
The Pillsbury Dough Boy gets sticky when wet.
The Old Spice Guy is kind of impervious to these sorts of things.
Ronald McDonald, well … nice try?
KFC’s Colonel “knows a thing or two about buckets.”
Macy’s did not pour ice on Santa.
It’s a good thing the Energizer Bunny is wearing flip-flops.
Honey Maid’s Teddy Grahams get soggy.
Chili’s gets chilly.

How Brands Can Tap China's Unique Social Media Culture
Posted in: UncategorizedIn China, the internet plays a uniquely powerful role in popular culture. Witty content, often involving Chinese-language puns or plays on words on social media, can make a huge impact here.
That’s partly because people in China have a relative dearth of exciting mainstream entertainment choices and trusted information sources, and because the one-child policy has left young people looking for opportunities to socialize.
So how are foreign brands tapping into China’s vibrant internet and social media culture? Take Mizone, a popular drink brand from Danone.
Everything You Don't Know About Tim Hortons if You Live South of the Border
Posted in: UncategorizedBurger King announced Monday that it was in talks to buy Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons.
The move is certainly a curious one, leaving some to wonder why the talks are happening in the first place. The combined company, according to the companies’ statement, would be headquartered in Canada, suggesting that part of the benefit would be the lower tax rate north of the border. Some observers suspect that the chains might offer some cobranded items, given both have breakfast offerings, although Burger King currently has a coffee deal with Seattle’s Best. Other analysts were skeptical that the joint company could cross-market its brands successfully, given failed cobranding efforts of the past. But plenty of Americans, at least, might mostly have wondered just what Tim Hortons is.
The first thing to know is that it’s one of the largest chains in Canada, with 3,400-plus stores. According to Euromonitor International, Tim Hortons accounts for more than 25% of all foodservice transactions in Canada. Here are a few more facts about the chain:
