Will Lions Health Prove that Healthcare Marketers are Creative, Once and For All?

It’s no secret that health and wellness marketing have been underrepresented in our industry’s award shows. Despite the fact that health and wellness are no longer limited to healthcare plans and pharmaceuticals — our category now supports healthier food options at chain restaurants, mattress brands committed to improving the quality of our sleep, and yoga studios promoting a healthy mind and body — we are still often marginalized as a niche category responsible for less creative work.

This year’s inaugural Cannes Lions Health festival, which celebrates creative communications in healthcare and wellness, will shine a light on the important and innovative work being done in our category.

I have worked in all areas of advertising in my career and I can’t imagine another category that has more of an impact on the lives of consumers than health and wellness. We market around the human condition with a sense of purpose, knowing that our work can result in something meaningful for consumers today who have never been more proactive and focused on their health and well being. Nielsen’s recent Health and Wellness survey found that more than 70 percent of Americans are trying to become healthier or maintain their current health, and Apple’s new iOS 8 Healthbook and Healthkit prove that wellness is a doctrine being embraced by millions.

Salary Survey: Creatives Are Most Sought-After, but See Smallest Raises

Adland employers seem to be hiring more often but salary growth is slowing, according to the annual Salary and Job Market report by recruitment firm 24 Seven.

The online survey of almost 2,000 marketing professionals found that 77% of respondents said they were hiring as often as last year or more, up from 60% in 2013. “People are feeling more hopeful after a long time of waiting to move forward,” said Natasha Lopoukhine, director of strategic content and communications for 24 Seven.

But salary increases aren’t any more common. Of those surveyed, 71% said they’d gotten a pay bump, compared with 72% in the survey last year. And salaries on the whole rose 4% on average, down from a 5.5% increase in 2013.

Big Brewers Respond to 'Food Babe' by Listing Ingredients

Anheuser-Busch InBev has begun publishing ingredients used in some of its beer brands in response to a well-publicized campaign by a blogger who calls herself “Food Babe.”

The babe, whose real name is Vani Hari, launched a signature-gathering drive on Wednesday for a petition calling on beer companies to list beer ingredients online. Federal regulations do not require beer brands to publicly list ingredients as is required for most other food products.

In a press release on Wednesday, Ms. Hari said she “grew concerned about the beer we are consuming, after discovering there is a long list of additives the government has approved for use in beer” including high-fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors and “ingredients found in airplane deicing liquid, genetically modified ingredients, and even fish swim bladders.”
