Maurice Lvy Talks Ethics, Succession at Publicis Shareholder Meeting


At the Publicis Groupe annual shareholders’ meeting in Paris, chairman and CEO Maurice Lvy spoke of the “beautiful dream” of the failed merger with Omnicom, and admitted that the experience has aged him.

Talking to about 450 shareholders and other attendees at the Publicis Cinema on the Champs Elyses in the French capital, Mr. Levy also commented on succession plans for the group, now that the merger is off. He said, “Everything has to come to an end, including the most marvelous experiences, and there will come a day when I’m going to have to walk out gracefully. I’m 72 and I’m starting to sag and look the worse for all this, so I have to get ready.”

He said that during the merger talks, it looked like part of the succession issue had been solved, but that a “hard and fast” conclusion had not been reached. “It’s now going to be up to the supervisory board to go back to that project,” Mr. Lvy said. “They will be doing so this fall and it’s going to take a little while. No doubt next year they will bounce back with the appropriate solution and I shall be there to help the company for as long as I’m welcome not necessarily in an operational role.”

Q&A: Branding Lessons From Comedian and '@midnight' Host Chris Hardwick


Chris Hardwick, who founded geek website Nerdist Industries in 2008 and is working on expanding his concurrent TV gigs to three from two, knows about building a brand that lives across platforms.

In Comedy Central’s “@midnight,” Mr. Hardwick arguably has TV’s most successful series at using social media. The late-night game show, which began in October and is hosted by Mr. Hardwick and co-produced by Nerdist, regularly outpaces both Jimmy Fallon and Conan O’Brien for Twitter mentions and breaks onto Twitter’s trending topics with its signature segment, #Hashtag Wars. During the segment, comedians devise one-liners for made-up hashtags. Viewers are encouraged to post their own responses to the hashtags on Twitter, with the best responses later shown on air.

Next up, Mr. Hardwick will bring his web series, “All-Star Celebrity Bowling” to AMC. In the pilot, set to debut on AMC next year, Mr. Hardwick competes in a friendly game of bowling against “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm. (Mr. Hardwick promises no bumpers in the gutters.)

Cisco VP: We Need to Market More Like B2C Companies


Joseph Puthussery, Cisco’s VP demand generation, believes his company’s marketing should look more like Netflix’s.

During last week’s SiriusDecisions conference, Mr. Puthussery lauded the streaming giant’s ability to personalize its website for millions of customers for a product selling for $8.99 a month. He said there was little reason for Cisco’s website not to offer similar personalization, considering its software is much more expensive.
