‘Madison & Vine’ Turns 10 — But How Far Has Branded Content Really Come?

It’s been 10 years since “Madison & Vine,” a book written by Scott Donaton while he was editor of Ad Age, called for the ad industry (Madison Avenue) and entertainment industry (Vine Street) to work together to survive the upheaval promised by ad-skipping technology like TiVo. This was to be done partly by clever product placement but more broadly through content consumers actually wanted to watch.

In some ways, the partnership between advertising and entertainment has become just as imperative and pervasive as the book predicted: There’s everything from the P&G-and-Walmart movies on NBC to sponsored listicles on BuzzFeed — and not a reality competition in sight without heavy brand integration. Subway product placement is extending the lives of TV shows that were on the brink. Millions of people go out of their way to watch videos created by Red Bull. Brands pay Stephen Colbert to make fun of them.

But in other ways, it’s shocking how little has changed. “The fact is, traditional TV advertising still works,” said Ben Silverman, founder and chairman of entertainment-production company Electus, former co-chairman of NBC Entertainment and enthusiastic proponent of branded entertainment. “So there’s not that aggressive a move away from it.”

Top 10 Product Placements of the Last 10 Years

It’s still not always clear whether marketers pay for their roles in entertainment, but movies and TV have made good use of big brands in the 10 years since “Madison & Vine” was published. And most of the brands here definitely paid. In chronological order:

1. AT&T, “American Idol,” 2002-2013. The longstanding partnership, which AT&T called off ahead of the show’s 13th season this year, was a defining cultural moment, according to Mitch Kanner, founder of Two Degrees Ventures. AT&T’s role in the show came when viewers were asked to vote on the singing contestants. “It taught America how to text,” Mr. Kanner said.

2. Pontiac, “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” 2004. The queen of talk shocked viewers when she gave all 276 audience members a Pontiac G-6 to mark the premiere of the show’s 13th season. The story crackled across the media, with “Saturday Night Live” spoofing Oprah’s emphatic, “Everybody gets a car! Everybody gets a car!” Pontiac donated the vehicles and paid the sales tax. Mark-Hans Richer, who is now Harley Davidson CMO (see No. 5), helped engineer the promotion when he was an executive at GM.

Ad Age and MediaCat Celebrate Second Annual Women to Watch in Turkey

The theme was “women who make a difference” at the second annual Women to Watch Turkey event, held by Ad Age and its local media partner MediaCat, part of Kapital Media.

The gala celebrated 15 honorees in marketing, advertising, media and popular culture in an evening at Istanbul’s Swissotel overlooking the Bosphorus on May 8. Women to Watch, in its 18th year in the U.S., is now held on four continents.

This year’s Women to Watch Turkey honorees include Ipek Zeren Suel, integrated marketing communications manager at Coca-Cola Turkey, who is behind such innovations as Coke’s first TV billboards and is currently overseeing the campaign celebrating the brand’s 50th anniversary in Turkey. Ms. Suel said that one of the campaign’s biggest initiatives is the unprecedented transformation of the Coca-Cola logo. Now, on cans, the soda’s name is written with a “K” instead of a “C.”

Pig Castration Might Make Media Squeal, but What About Voters?

Political advertising can teach us many things about marketing, whether it be the need for boots on the ground, the impact of direct mail, the power of big data, why TV still matters.

Or how cutting through the clutter with a viral hit that gets you millions of free media impressions can be a completely useless thing.

You may have heard of Joni Ernst. She’s a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Iowa. She hasn’t even made it through the primaries yet, but she’s bubbled up into national news coverage twice. Not because of her policy ideas, not because she’s won the endorsement of Sarah Palin, but rather because of her advertising.
