First Look: Ricky Gervais, David Chang in New Ads for Audi

Entry-level luxury cars sounds like an oxymoron. In fact, new, smaller luxury sedans priced below $30,000 such as the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class are one of the fastest-growing segments of business. Audi of America breaks a new campaign today starring funnyman Ricky Gervais to tout its new entry into the segment: the 2015 Audi A3 sedan, which goes on sale nationwide April 3 at a starting price of $29,900.

The highlight of the new campaign is a 60-second spot called “Dues” starring Mr. Gervais, the British comedian who created “The Office” before moving on to feature films and hilariously taking down Hollywood’s elite as host of the Golden Globes awards show.

In the spot from Venables Bell & Partners, San Francisco, we see Mr. Gervais, U.S. gold medal winning boxer Claressa Shields, celebrity chef David Chang, comedian Kristen Schaal and other iconoclasts reciting lines from Queen’s hit song, “We Are the Champions.”

Automation in Advertising? Bring It On

In 1987, when I was an account supervisor, someone from operations plopped a Macintosh computer on my desk. Back then, the Mac wasn’t much more than a glorified word processor that enabled me to type my own documents and correspondence and print them out without dictating to an assistant.

Back then, art directors used X-acto knives to splice art and copy, and it wasn’t at all unusual for most of them to be missing at least a piece of some finger. Mechanicals were pieced together by hand so they could be photocopied as proofs for other departments and agency clients.

These memories came back to me during a recent discussion with some colleagues about automation in the advertising industry. The Mac, the dot-matrix printer and the copy machine were the earliest forms of automation I could think of in my ad career besides the creation of databases for mailing lists used by direct-mail companies.

Orbit Gum Puts Sarah Silverman’s Latest Breakup in TV Ad

Sarah Silverman’s break-up with Jimmy Kimmel a few years ago has proven to be great comedic fodder for both stars. In a new TV ad, Ms. Silverman is going for laughs after the end of an even hotter relationship: a one-night stand with a cup of coffee.

The ad, by Omnicom Group’s Energy BBDO of Chicago, for Wrigley’s Orbit, seeks to position the gum as a way to “break up with lingering food” and get that “just-brushed clean feeling.” The brand has been pushing the message for a while with previous ads that also personified food, including one spot in which a man is needled by talking nachos as he tries to watch a polo match.
