Campbell Ewald Takes Home USAA

usaa08.jpg

It’s a very quiet ad today, so it’s nice to see that amongst the meager amount of news is a win. Campbell Ewald has taken home media and buying duties for USAA. While the shop has recently been laying-off staffers due to the turmoil with GM, it’s nice to see that perhaps with this win, there won’t be more bodies on the unemployment line.

Of course, when there’s a winner, there’s a loser. Deutsch has held the account for the last year, but a new CMO has recently come to the USAA and you know what that (genearlly) means for the AOR. Lay-offs from Deutsch have been recorded at lower numbers than the majority of agencies. Hopefully, the USAA account won’t change that.

Word Press For The Win

The media business is a train wreck. In Denver, the people running the train have decided to make a platform for those who would gawk.

We meet in this strange place in a noble effort to save the Rocky Mountain News. And if we can’t save the Rocky, we can, at minimum, make some noise before we go. Since the day the proposed sale of the Rocky was announced, we’ve been waiting for the odd billionaire to join our cause. This may surprise you, but none has come forward. Apparently Phil and Tim and Pat and the rest of the team must have misplaced our e-mail address. So, we turn now to the non-billionaires. We think there may be more of you.

According to The New York Times, Rich Boehne, president and chief executive of the E. W. Scripps Company, told a stunned newsroom on Dec. 4 that the company’s flagship paper, beset by $11 million in losses in nine months this year, was up for sale.

Scripps also owns The Boulder Daily Camera, Naples Daily News, Evansville Courier & Press and several other small market papers.

TechCrunch Eats Crow on Hulu Predictions

jason_1.jpg

AP today has a story about how Hulu is the Web site of the year, noting that the News Corp/NBC U offering had steep hills to overcome in order to survive behind YouTube and others. But it did, and now it’s the professional video site to partner with.

A funny comment made its way into the article, in which TechCrunch Editor and notorious press-release anarchist Michael Arrington notes, “Boy, did we have to eat crow. I was wrong. Hulu rocks. Despite ridiculous odds, the company was able to pull of a joint venture between two humongous parent media companies and provides users with a compelling, sexy product.”

So, start talking to Hulu about placement if you haven’t already. And, keep in mind that 66 percent of SNL’s views during the presidential race came from Web viewers (though we’re not sure how many of those were Hulu’s).

Holiday Greetings From Russia, With Weirdness

In its online holiday card, the Russian digital agency Victory goes for a little lo-fi surreality.

Super Dog Bowl

Pedigree, which is owned by Mars, will be running a Super Bowl ad next February, but the ad won’t tell pet owners why the brand is superior to P&G’s Iams or Colgate-Palmolive’s Hill’s Science Diet. Instead the ad from TBWA\Chiat\Day will encourage pet adoption.

Here’s more from The Wall Street Journal:

Pedigree, which has never advertised during the big game, says the cause-marketing approach is the way to go. “It’s the right message to send out at this time,” says John Anton, Pedigree’s director of marketing. “More dogs are going to end up in shelters because of home foreclosures.” He adds, “Every time we run this campaign, we see increased sales.”

Pedigree says it spends about half its marketing budget on pushing adoption. The company declines to reveal its annual marketing budget, but TNS Media Intelligence data suggest the company spent about $32.2 million on ads last year.

Apparently, You Can Alway Go Home. See: Chad Stoller

31765-chadstollerL.jpg

A press release informs us that Chad Stoller has gone back home – to digital shop Organic, that is. Stoller is back baby! as the Executive Director of Emerging Platforms Strategy. So where was he for oh, say six months? He was the VP of marketing at Drop.io, which offers a similar service to Fileshare. Back in July, when Stoller originally left Organic he said:

“I’m a lot more inspired developing applications than building advertising programs. I truly believe it’s about applications over advertising. The future of consumer marketing is building tools people want to use.”

Hmm… Chad’s a smart guy, but he’s back pushing ad programs. Maybe he just picked the wrong brand to jump to? Organic’s got a year with him this time around. Betcha. When you’re ready to jump client side, well… sayanora baby.
