Black Friday, Cyber Monday Efforts Lure Shoppers
Posted in: UncategorizedStarbucks Gets (Red) This Holiday Season
Posted in: UncategorizedRemember how Starbucks gave away free coffee to anyone who voted, then changed their tune when they realized, um, it’s illegal to offer incentives for voting? Well, now the coffeemaker wants you to know that for this holiday season, five cents from each sale of certain drinks will be donated to save lives in Africa.
Yes indeedly-doo kiddies, Starbucks has jumped on the (RED) wagon. Suffice it to say, we’re bo(red) with life saving — please it’s so last year. Kidding. Kudos, coffee-people. Now, is there anything we can do about how wasteful coffee drinking has become? Cups + tops + sugar packet + pointless wooden stir-stick + cardboard hand protector thing = WASTE! Just sayin’.
In the spot above, you’ll see a nice little music/written word dance about the (RED) offering. Check it out, it’s nice and all that.
It was only about a week ago that Starbucks finally announced BBDO is their AOR, and already strong “giving back” branding seems to be their approuch. Well, considering how much money the company has taken from unsuspecting coffee drinkers, it’s about time. Must…end…caffeine addiction.

Posted in: UncategorizedAegis Kicks Out Robert Lerwill
Posted in: UncategorizedRobert Lerwill, Aegis’ Group chief executive, is leaving the company at the end of the month. He’s been in the position since 2005.
Lerwill spent most of his time fighting off Vincent Bollore to win seats on Aegis’ board and dealing with Renault-Nissan’s $750 million defecation to OMD.
Hunh. Well, Lerwill got his. He was given an 11 percent pay raise last year, so there.

More Whitewashing And Today’s Not-So-Feel-Good Statistic
Posted in: Uncategorized“…turnover with minorities is 30 percent higher than whites at IPG.”
Adweek used a non-staff writer to put together this report on diversity, and the lack thereof, in the ad industry. While much of the report is nothing new, that 30% stat is huge. Because we’re talking about IPG–a very, very large holding company, not some small agency where 30% would only amount to a few folks.
With the economy and the ad industry tanking, diversity still won’t be a priority. Much of what I wrote 4 years ago on this topic still holds true:
The bottom line is, well, the bottom line. Ad agencies are too tightly staffed to go out of their way to recruit minorities the way FORTUNE 500 companies and others might. Plus, there is no job security for anyone–and agencies who layoff people on a somewhat regular basis might be opening themselves up to discrimination lawsuits if those layoffs include minorities. There may be some good old-fashioned CYA happening there.
Agencies these days are not proactive–they’re reactive. If clients demand that the agency staff reflect the makeup of their audience, then you might see things change. But it won’t happen just because some agency CEO makes a speech at an industry conference or some equal opportunity line gets thrown into a classified ad. It’ll happen one person at a time, one interview at a time, one position at a time.

Cheil Acquires Stake in Beattie McGuinness Bungay
Posted in: Uncategorized
NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — Korea's biggest agency network, Cheil Worldwide, bought a 49% stake in London agency Beattie McGuinness Bungay today in a first step toward creating a micro-network that will open in New York next year. The goal for Cheil, Samsung Electronics' Seoul-based in-house ad agency, is to consolidate its role with Samsung as well as start building its own international business apart from its largest client.
