Updated: Avenue A|Razorfish Poised for Sale to WPP, Insider Says

Razorfish.jpg

Avenue A|Razorfish could be up for sale by Microsoft, a spy tells us, possibly to WPP. From the beginning of the relationship, AA|RF has been an odd fit for Microsoft, and based on a few strong indicators, we surmise a sell off before too long.

When you’re spending $6 billion to pick up a company like Redmond, it makes sense to get as much for your money as possible. That seems to be what Microsoft was thinking when they kept AA|RF &#151 but a year later the agency is broadening its horizons, expanding services to “a media and entertainment consulting practice with 200 staffers in New York, L.A. and San Francisco,” according to Silicon Alley Insider.

More after the jump.

Couture Car Stores – ‘Italian Models’ at Lamborghini’s Las Vegas Boutique (VIDEO)

(TrendHunter.com) Lamborghini’s brand new 20,000 square foot, two-story Las Vegas showroom includes far more than models of the famed luxury automobiles.  The store is also the home of the first Lamborghini fashion boutique…

As Jon Stewart Would Say

“And now, your moment of Zen.” Just repeat “Om” in your head (or out loud) over and over while watching this video. You’ll feel better. You’re about to see what happens when a printer and a waterfall come together after one too many pink schmoozers. It’s cool, and includes dolphins. (Thanks John).

Imagine the marketing possibilities.

Speedo Is A Big Winner at the 2008 Olympics, Nike Not So Much

speedos.jpg

I talked about Nike’s selfless decision to allow its sponsored swimmers to wear Speedo’s new technology swim suits. That decision has translated to huge business for Speedo. US Olympic swimmers have used these suits to win the majority of the gold medals in the games thus far.

According to Adage Speedo has begun to receive preorders for the suit that comes with the hefty price tag of $550. And Speedo has been a big topic of conversation regarding the US swim team’s success. The article talks about Nike’s decision to allow swimmers to wear their rivals suits and quotes a Speedo spokewoman as saying, “We were shocked and flattered by it, and we thank them for it. Going forward, will we use it in marketing? Sure.”

So Speedo will mention Nike and offer them a thank you in their marketing going forward. But will that really benefit Nike? Who will remember their decision in a few months? Speedo really is the winner here because there are the medals and accolades to prove their success. How much money has this grand gesture cost Nike?

The Problem With ‘Hispanic Insights’

All Latinos love music, soccer and food, don't they? These seem to be the "insights" all marketers have been leveraging into their Hispanic advertising approach for years now. The problem is that a lot of non-Hispanic segments also like music, soccer and food, and herein lies the challenge — what insights should we use to adequately reach Hispanics?

Man, was my ESPN/Orbitz trip awesome!

Redsoxcap
ESPN and Orbitz are teaming up for a sports-related travel Web site! OMG! (I wanted the "O" in OMG to look like a baseball, you know, with the red stitches? But they don’t seem to have that key on my Mac.) Anyway, Brandweek, which I read so that one day I can be a CMO and not have to, says the site "has been designed to serve as an online travelogue for sports fans taking road trips to see the next big game." Sounds like a great idea that will generate scintillating copy! I’m uploading my latest adventure:
July 19: Set out on big road trip to Red Sox game. Even though I live about 20 minutes from Fenway Park, I’ve rented a Winnebago and plan to "take the scenic route" and see as much of this great country as possible.

July 21: First stop, Pennsylvania. Narrowly escaped with my life when
giant promotional Bobblehead Doll took offense after I asked for
directions and declined offer of undercooked cheese steak.
July 25: Got great close-up gator pics on a spin through the
Everglades, though I am now having some difficulty driving with seven
fingers. Wish I’d paid extra for the automatic transmission!
Aug 4: Finally smuggled myself out of jail in a laundry bag. It’s a
long story, but here’s some advice: If you’re ever streaking on Lake
Shore Drive at rush hour, do not start taunting Cubs fans through a
bullhorn. They have no sense of humor. That goes double for the mayor.
Aug 7: Seems I’ve got "Manny Ramirez, Red Sox 4EVR" tattooed across my ass. Damn you, Bruiser, I hope they deny your parole! Luckily, the dude was a forger. The lettering’s exquisite.
Aug 12: Oh man, the GPS keeps staring at me like HAL in 2001. Wrapped tin foil around my face so it can’t beam CIA signals into my brain. I’ll finish this entry after pulling over to talk to this nice motorcycle officer who’s been trying to get my attention for the past 30 miles.
Aug 14: Well, I made it to the Red Sox game! Took co-worker’s
suggestion to wear Yankees cap and N.Y. Giants’ T-shirt and spray-paint
Derek Jeter’s likeness on both sides of the Winnebago. The scalpers are
rocking the van to and fro, and a bunch of fans are waving bats and
heading in my direction. This is gonna be awesome!

Cursing as Advertising Strategy

I don’t know if this letter I just received through the Contact Me form is a case of misdirected anger, a weird spam mutation, or some kind of viral campaign, but if it’s the latter, it’s the most brilliant piece of copyrighting I’ve seen in some time. Who can resist clicking the link?

Wonder if it’s this Martina, too.
