(TrendHunter.com) It seems the fascination with animal heads on the walls isn’t letting up. These robotic animal head wall mounts make this our eighth fake taxidermy feature. We’ve seen classy antler chandeliers, and we’ve seen very tacky joke pieces. These are by far the most interaction of the bunch.

Blurring the digital lines: the future of head tracking

For some reason, today being a leap day makes me think of the future. Probably because there won’t be another leap day for four years… or something like that. I can only imagine how technology and media will evolve. Interestingly, I came across this video today showcasing the prototype for Sony PlayStation3’s Camera with headtracking capability. Pretty cool, if not just a bit scary. The majority of head-tracking devices either require some apparatus to be worn, or else lack the definition that the PS3 camera seems to possess.

While certainly a fun and interesting advancement for video games, could there be other implications to such advanced yet simple head-tracking technology? Billboards with eyes that really do follow you? Some new form of direct communication? Interesting to think about. And to view the video with sound, check out the link below.

Oscars Wins the Week, but Not Best Performance

MINNEAPOLIS (AdAge.com) — It's hard to imagine the late Ethel Merman singing the blues. But her celebratory show tune, "There's no business like show business," could have been covered by B.B. King this week, as what is usually a highlight, the Academy Awards, ran to sharply lower ratings on ABC last Sunday.

VeriSign putting the cart before the horse

McCann Erickson goes hard for the humor in its latest VeriSign campaign. There’s a “Cart Whisperer” named “Liberty Fillmore” who rounds up abandoned shopping carts. The teaser clip above is more amusing than I’d expected, but the shopping-cart metaphor (companies that lose consumer trust also lose customers) was a stretch. Still, VeriSign isn’t Apple, so you’ve got to give the e-commerce infrastructure company points for trying to do something a little different. The YouTube video got 833,000+ views in five days? And almost every comment says “LOL”? The agency’s employees, and their families and friends, must be aching with carpel tunnel. The No More Abandoned Carts site takes the joke a bit too far with copy like “Save a cart, win a thing.” I actually lost IQ points typing that line, and I didn’t have all that many to start with. Hey, ever race shopping carts down store aisles or crash them into BMWs outside a Whole Foods? I’m just curious.

Urban Is the New Mainstream

It's 2008 and besides being an election year, this will mark the year that the question of whether urban has gone mainstream will finally be answered. After all, how foreign can our culture be, when America could elect the first black president? Let's not miss the cultural and business impact of that move when it happens.
