Are You Just a Service or a Brand?

We started the 2008 school year in the Integrated Media program at Mount Hood Community College a few weeks ago. As is our habit, we are using "Lovemarks: The Future Beyond Brands" as the primary text. It's not because there are so many pretty pictures (which I definitely need), but there are clear and simple ideas that give our students a clear foundation for understanding the basic concepts of branding.

New ABC Logo. Why?!

bp_a1.jpg abclogo.jpg

There are logo’s that are iconic, and there are logo’s that are forgettable. The new Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) logo is definitely the latter.

The station’s ‘Exercise your imagination’ tag line was obviously not an objective in the design brief.

Here was an an iconic symbol, just like that of the American networks NBC, CBS or ABC identities, replaced by a generic typeface.

And the very least it’s a total waste of tax payer money.

There is further debate over at TVTonight.com.au along with screenshots of the on air ident package.

I Might Not Be Latina Enough for One Texan Apparel Maker

For a long while I thought my inability to squeeze into my Levi's or Gap jeans had something to do with a recent trip to Mexico City, where I indulged in sopes and quesadillas as if there was no tomorrow. As it turns out, the only reason Latino women like myself are having trouble fitting in their regular jeans is the result of our naturally and genetically-programmed bootylicious look. So says Fiorana, an apparel maker from Fort Worth, Texas

QTrax: Screenshot, Stock Chart

QTrax, the start-up that only days ago was promising 25M legally-downloadable songs, doesn’t have any deals signed with major labels after all, but today the company has made its player available. It’s a re-skin of the open-source player Songbird. For now, you can only play music from your own computer (or, thanks to the built-in browser, from a web site), but there are already plenty of ads. The Samsung banner opens this page in a separate tab.

Below is the stock chart for the QTrax’s holding company. Someone’s made a few bucks in what is reminiscent of those pump-and-dump schemes you get in your spam folder.

Update [Jan 29, ’08] Wired: Is QTrax a Stock Scam?
