Rishika Karna is an illustrator and graphic designer. Traveling across vibrant cities in India during her childhood ignited a passion for diverse art forms. Comics and manga became her constant companions, fueling her passion for visual storytelling. Today, inspired by this diverse heritage, She crafts captivating narratives that resonate, transforming vision into illustrations.

Why are you an Illustrator?
Comics were my jam! Diamond comics, tinkle and Champak ignited a passion for art. A few panels – a universe of emotions, action, and laughter. I became an illustrator to weave visual stories, just like the comics that stole my childhood heart.

Did you attend school for fine art or design?
Studied engineering, but my heart belonged to art. Switched gears with a Masters in Graphic Design from MIT Institute of Design, Pune.

You have a distinct style of illustration. How long did it take you to develop your style?
My illustrative voice is still evolving! I wouldn’t say I have a fully formed style yet, but I’m constantly experimenting and exploring different techniques and aesthetics. I am excited to see how it turns out in future.

Were there any particular role models for you when you grew up?
To be honest, None!

Who was the most influential personality on your career in Illustrations?
Vivek Ram from Vaanersena Studios. I did human anatomy training which he started during COVID for free and that helped a lot.

What made you decide to become a freelance illustrator? When did you start freelancing? Do you illustrate for advertising?
Freelancing keeps my creative spark alive! Collaborating with talented individuals across diverse projects (2 years strong!) pushes me to grow and experiment.

Are many advertising agencies getting illustrations made these days? Do you work more with agencies or publishers?
Illustration has definitely been on rise in advertising. As a freelancer, Indiefolio connects me with clients seeking fresh visual storytelling. It’s a win-win for creatives!

Was there any time when you wanted to quit Illustrations?
I would say yes. The creative field, despite its undeniable allure, can be incredibly demanding and lead to periods of exhaustion and diminished inspiration. Even the most passionate artists experience dips in motivation. The rise of AI presents a new challenge, forcing us to adapt in this fast-paced industry. But, AI can’t replicate the human touch, the distinct voice that separates one’s art from the rest.

You also do some graphic design work along with illustration. Would you say your illustration talents influence your graphic design work?
My background in illustration helps me visualize concepts more effectively. I can quickly translate abstract ideas into clear and engaging visuals, which is crucial for strong graphic design.

Have you considered turning your illustrations into toys?
Definitely in the future! But I am currently focusing on improving my work.

In terms of resources Youtube & skillshare has some amazing artists and illustrators like Marco Bucci, Bobby Chiu, Sumouli Dutta and many more whose courses are easily accessible.

You have such a wide experience as a top working professional. What advice do you have for aspiring creative professionals? Would you advise them to take on Illustration as a career option? Is it paying well enough?
I feel I am still at the start of my career and am still figuring out. It’s exhilarating and passionate, but it also comes with periods of self-doubt and lower motivation. The key is to learn to manage those ebbs and flows. When inspiration wanes, refocus on fundamentals, explore new techniques, or even take a creative break to recharge.

Whats your dream project?
To work for a children’s book.
