Modern Farmer, Mag for Farm-to-Table Crowd, Joins Usual Suspects in National Magazine Award Nominations


The Whole Foods crowd is going to be well represented at this year’s National Magazine Awards.

Modern Farmer, a quarterly introduced last March to cover both farmers and the farm-to-table movement, has picked up two National Magazine Award nominations from the American Society of Magazine Editors, one for general excellence among special-interest magazines and one in the magazine section category for its “Modern Farmer Handbook.”

The magazine, published in Hudson, N.Y. and found in the Whole Foods checkout aisle (among other places) has earned plaudits for its coverage and its covers, which have featured a rooster, a goat, a sheep and, most recently, a pig. It’s also aired 24-hour live feeds of its cover subjects on its website. (Ad Age last year named it a magazine brand “to watch,” one of three on a list accompanying the annual Magazine A-List.)
