MRM//McCann Promotes Ariana Stolarz to Global Chief Strategy Officer

MRM//McCann promoted Ariana Stolarz to the role of global chief strategy officer.

“Throughout Ariana’s U.S. and international agency career, she has developed smart brand strategies focused on understanding consumer behavior as it relates to the fast-evolving world of digital technology,” said Bill Kolb, president, diversified agencies, McCann Worldgroup. “In her expanded role, she will help MRM//McCann continue to integrate brand insights with data and technology in ways that help our clients generate innovative and business-building customer-relationship solutions.”

Stolartz joined MRM//McCann in October of 2013 and led the New York and Princeton strategy teams before being promoted to  global director of strategy two years later. Before joining the agency she spent nearly four years as managing director, experience strategy with mcgarrybowen, leading digital and social media strategy for the agency on all accounts. Prior to that she spent nearly six years with The Vidal Partnership as director of digital strategy, following over a year and a half as regional project manager, direct and digital for JWT Miami.

She appears to be the MRM//McCann organization’s first strategy leader on the global level. Her promotion follows a May executive shakeup that saw CEO Michael McLaren depart along with the agency’s head of client services; MRM//McCann has yet to name a new chief executive, though McCann Worldgroup president of diversified agencies Bill Kolb has been handling those responsibilities for the past four months. The move followed client Verizon’s earlier decision to consolidate its FiOS direct marketing business with independent agency Rauxa.

“No matter how complex the marketing landscape gets, we still need our best and brightest focused on finding strong human truths that help inspire the ideas we make, no matter the form,” said McCann Worldgroup global CSO Suzanne Powers. “Ariana’s got it all: From her experience in social sciences and all things digital to her strong strategic acumen and intuitive understanding of brands and people; she’s the perfect blend.”

McCann NY Makes Some Cuts

We’ve received confirmation that McCann, which of course just brought on Suzanne Powers as its new CSO, has also had to cut some staff this week in its New York hub. Sources tell us that reductions were made in staffing levels and capabilities across departments. The reason? Well, as we’ve seen time and time again in these kinds of situations, it was “to best service clients.” From what we’re hearing, the number of those affected by McCann’s move is over a dozen and less than 20. We’ll fill you in if we hear more.

Here’s What Happening at CP+B Following Powers Departure

Lost in all the hullabaloo of Suzanne Powers‘ departure from CP+B and appointment as EVP/chief strategy officer at McCann is what’s happening on the former’s end in the wake of the move. Our bad. As you may have read, CP+B is restructuring its planning department (or COG department as they call it), axing the global strategy officer position formerly held by Powers to start with. According to CP+B camp, under the new structure, the COG departments in each of the agency’s offices will report to an executive planning director designated for said office. CP+B is kicking things off by promoting Jason De Turris and Benny Thomas to EPDs for Boulder and L.A., with Miami and Europe appointments to be announced at a later date.

In addition, CP+B has launched a new initiative called Mixed Reality Lab, which will be led by nine-year agency vet  Wojtek Szumowski, who currently holds the title of EVP/group director of cognitive and cultural studies. What is Mixed Reality Lab? Well, according to CP+B’s rather poetic description, it’s “designed to continue to question convention, to prototype, experiment and examine the relationships between humans, technology and brands.”

Regarding the planning revamp as a whole, CP+B CEO Andrew Keller says in a statement, “At CP+B, we are constantly reassessing our structure, ensuring that we are meeting and exceeding our clients’ needs in every capacity, and streamlining and redefining as we see fit. This new structure really speaks to where we are as an agency, and the innovation and global strategic insights that we offer our clients are best delivered in this redesign.”

Powers Assumes Global CSO Role at McCann

Busy day on the IPG-related front, to say the least, as now McCann Erickson has announced that Suzanne Powers has joined the agency in the global role of EVP/chief strategy officer. Powers takes over for Daryl Lee, who was bumped up to global CEO of McCann sibling, UM. The new global CSO, meanwhile, arrives from CP+B, where she spent two-and-a-half-years in a similar position as global strategy officer.

In a statement, McCann Worldgroup chairman/CEO Harris Diamond says of his agency’s new hire, “We are pleased to have Suzanne join us. Suzanne has the energy, passion and skills to lead our incredibly talented group of strategic executives. She brings us a unique perspective on how to build global insights and ideas across our brands, geographies and culture.”

Prior to CP+B, Powers spent a decade at TBWA, moving up the ranks from account planner to global strategy director, working with brands including Mars, Nivea and GSK along the way.
