Idiotic America Ad Critic Gets Metrics Lesson From Carlsberg

carlsberg_uncompromisingly_slim.png

Here’s a simple concept. Beer cans sweat when removed from the refrigerator. When they sweat, condensation forms on the outside of the can. When condensation forms, droplets of water form. When droplets of water form, gravity takes over and the droplets slide down the side of the can.

When droplets of water form and slide down the side of the can, creatives at M&C Saatchi Stockholm get busy making an ad for Carlsberg 33cl which, by the way, is not 33 calories. It’s 33 centiliters which is 11.16 ounces. I’m not even going to tell you the shame my non-metric American brain experienced coming to that conclusion.

David Bowie, Pixie Dust Help Introduce Sony Experia Z Smartphone

sony_experia_z.png

This week, McCann London released a new ad for the Sony Xperia Z smartphone. The ad, shot by director Tarsem and accompanied by David Bowie’s Sound and Vision, aims to recall how Sony has been a part of people’s lives for a very long time.

The ad opens on a group of people watching the moon landing on a Sony TV. Next, it cuts to a shot of two rollerblading beauties in LA listening to the original Sony Walkman. The Sony Handycam is the focus of the next shot as it records the fall of the Berlin wall. Then the shot depicts two teenagers deep in concentration playing the first PlayStation console and finally, the viewer is left with a vivid explosion of colour as we see a couple experiencing the Festival of Holi in India through their Sony smartphone.

It’s really quite beautiful.

These New Burger King Spots Are Not Hacked

bk_two_thumbs.png

We could get excited about these three new Burger King spots from Mother which tout the brand’s new Arabica coffee and Gouda Bacon sandwich but all we can focus on is the chef in the Gouda commercial not wearing sanitary gloves and how two of the spot’s titles, Two Thumbs and First Cup remind us of something else entirely.

Aside from those distractions, the work is respectable and we suppose it will help distract us from Monday’s Twitter account hack.

Schweppes Makes People Dp Cray Tumble From Mountaintop

schweppes_tumble.png

When you drink a Schweppes, do you feel the schweppervecence? Does it make you want to tumble down a 10,000 foot mountain? Roll through the forest? Plunge over a waterfall? If you’re in a George Patterson Y&R Schweppes commercial it sure does.

Anyway, stop daydreaming and get back to work.

ASICS Takes on Homing Pigeon in New Orleans

asics_pigeon.png

In VITRO’s latest spot for ASICS America, we wee a runner engaged in a different sort of workout – racing a homing pigeon through the streets of New Orleans. The runner pushes himself to keep up with a bird whose species, by the way has been clocked at upwards of 110 mph (who knew?)

The commercial is for the new GEL-Kayano 19 running shoe and also debuts ASICS’ new tagline “Nothing But Next.”

To film The Pigeon Workout, ASICS enlisted 70 trained pigeons, shooting at 11 locations in New Orleans including the French Quarter. ASICS’ “Pigeon Workout” will be airing on networks like ESPN, and TNT, including placement during NBA games.

Dance Champs Sam and Lisa Do ‘Wet Dog Wiggle’ For Kayak

sam_lisa_kayak.png

Barton F. Graf 9000 hooked up with dance champions Sam and Lisa West for their latest Kayak work. Sam is a 6 time champion of the Carolina Shag Division at the USA Grand National Dance Championships and a 3 time US Open Shag Champion. Lisa is winner of the 1997 US Open Cabaret Championship and two-time winners of the American Swing Dance Championships in the Showcase Division.

The two can be seen doing the Wet Dog Wiggle and the Chattanooga Chicken on their way to the registration desk of a hotel for a stay which they, of course, booked using Kayak.

Scary ‘Ski Mask’ Guy Touts Benefits of VW Beetle Convertible

vw_beetle_convertible_mask.png

What would you do if you a man walked into a convenience store wearing a ski mask? While you’d probably do your best not to jump to conclusions, likely you’d still be scared shitless.

Or you’d realize you were in a Volkswagen Convertible Beetle Convertible commercial touting the fact that every day, including freezing cold days, are top down days, hence the ski masks. Nice work, Deutsch LA.

Whatever You Do in Bed, Sealy Supports It

sealy_supports.png

You might not initially think of a mattress as a focal point of your life’s intimate (and, no, we don’t mean sex) family moments but if you stop and think for a minute, we think you’ll come up with a precious moment or two that took place on your mattress.

That’s the focus of this very different mattress ad for Sealy created by LA-based Arcana Academy. Taking the brand’s ‘Whatever You Do In Bed, Sealy Supports It’ campaign into new emotional territory, the spot recounts the story of a family moving across the country. When they hit a bump in the road, the mattress flies off the back of their moving track and the seminal moments in lives flash before viewers’ eyes.

It’s quite touching actually.

Sports Drink Maker Does DollarShaveClub Ad

skratch_labs.png

OK, so it’s not a shot for shot “homage” of DollarShaveClub’s ad but it’s the same concept; founder wanders through low key office/warehouse talking about the wonders of the product while dropping witty reparte and passing by randomly weird situations.

In this ad, Skratch Labs (wacky name for a sports drink company) co-founder Aaron delivers the very DollarShaveClub-like message that’s all down homey and touts the brand’s focus on natural ingredients.

We suppose everything is ultimately a copy of something else so to complain is really just a waste of breath, right?

Andy Richter, Alien Attack Featured in New Lottery Ads

new_york_lottery_richter.png

Two witty new New York Lottery spots from DDB NY continue the brand’s “Yea, that kind of rich” theme. In one spot, we see a guy spouting off brilliant humor. Thing is, it’s not his own humor. He’s rich enough to afford Andy Richter and a room full of writers to feed him jokes through a microphone.

In another spot, one rich friend pulls a very elaborate prank on a friend. He leads his friend to believe the city is under attack by aliens…all just to get a picture of his horrified friend.

Yea, that kind of rich.

Delissio Pizza Will Knock the Mormon Out of You

delissio_pizza.png

OK, OK, so maybe assuming the family in this Delissio pizza commercial are Mormon is blatantly stereotypical but the headline kind of wrote itself so we went with it. Complaints are welcome in comments.

Anyway, in the commercial, created by DraftFCB Toronto, a mom serves Delissio pizza for dinner. The family then imagines what their less-drab life might be like if it were fueled by Delissio pizza. All manner of excitable family togetherness ensues including mom getting a tramp stamp.

Back to reality…and dad decides to “forbid this wheel of temptation.” Your loss, dad. Mom’s non-Mormon look is kind of hot.

Schneider Beer Asks Women to Forgive Men For Acting Like Idiots

schneider_beer_imaturity.png

Created by Ogilvy Argentina, this Schneider Beer commercial asks women to forgive men for their various annoyances such as tacky compliments, questionable browser history, an unbuttoned shirt as sex appeal device, taking no as a yes, playing a guitar that doesn’t exist and for not washing hands. Oh yes, this one’s got it all ladies.

Kaley Cuoco Teams With William Shatner in New Priceline Ad

cuoco_shatner_priceline.png

It would appear The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco is the new ad babe. Hot off signing a deal to appear in a Super Bowl ad for Toyota, Cuoco will appear in a new ad for Priceline. And Shatner is back after having been dropped from a bridge during last year’s Super Bowl.

The new ad, which begins running January 14, has Shatner driving to the top of a mountain with a little girl and dropping her off in front of a dojo. Decades later, he returns to pick her up and she is revealed as his daughter, played by actress Kaley Cuoco. After years of training, Cuoco is highly skilled in the art of finding the best travel deals. And she’s got some new travel deal tricks to show dear old dad.

Of her work in the ad, Cuoco said, “It’s definitely exciting working with Bill, and being part of a campaign and a brand that I’ve pretty much grown up with. He has single-handedly built the Priceline Negotiator into a pop culture icon. I think there’s a lot of overlap in our fans, who will appreciate seeing us together as a father and daughter team. And who wouldn’t want to be William Shatner’s daughter?”

Who wouldn’t, indeed!

Cats in the Cradle-Like Message Urges Man to Smell the Roses

nescafe1.jpg

Working with a52 and Rock Paper Scissors, twofifteenmccann created this beautiful spot for Nescafe which relates perfectly to the busy world in which we all live. Delivering a contemporary version of the message within Harry Chapin’s classic Cats in the Cradle, the Spanish language commercial examines all the beautiful things a man could experience if only he took the time to do so.

And, it seems, all one needs to do to find this time as grab a cup of Nescafe and sit down with Dad in a cafe.

Google Play Puts Kibosh on Cookie Monter’s New Year’s Resolution

google_play_cookie_monster.png

For anyone who thinks New Year’s resolutions are never broken or whether or not Sesame Street Cookie Monster will ever stop eating cookies, look no further than this new Google Play ad.

In the ad, Cookie Monster attempts to turn over a new leaf first buying the Rocky soundtrack then downloading fitness apps and, finally, grabbing a subscription to Everyday Food:Light. Except that’s were it all goes wrong and things, as they usually do, return to normal.

Mrs. Claus Gives Santa A Racy Video

santa_mrs_claus_samsung.png

Following the Samsung Galaxy S III commercial in which a wife sends her husband a racy video as he leaves for a business trip, the brand is out with a holiday-themed version. Upon leaving to deliver presents Christmas eve, the elves offer Santa something to watch during his sleigh ride. Then Santa’s wife offers up a video and says, “you probably shouldn’t watch it on the sleigh.”

Both commercials, of course, promote the phone’s ability to send videos from one phone to another by touching them. Hmm. Sort of like the iPhone Bump app has been doing for about five years.

Cisco Predicts Power of Internet Ten Years Too Late

cisco_tomorrow_starts_here.png

We don’t mean to be nasty or anything or rap some knuckles like an old school teacher might do but, really, Cisco? Really? Cisco is changing its tagline from Human Network to Tomorrow Start Here and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners is helping them do so.

A new commercial, which touts how the internet has and will interconnect all of us, plays like it could have aired in 1998 at the cusp of the internet boom. Now granted, we were a bit obsessed with idiotic ideas like Flooz, Boo, iSmell, CueCat and iLoo but even in 1998, the internet pretty much already connected everything.

Yes, we have come a long way, baby but this Current Cisco effort is, well, so grounded in mundane reality that it leave the viewer with a big, “Yea, so what?”

The commercial promises our world will be amazing and exciting and…not that far away. How about already here. Ten years ago.

What the Hell Are These Guys Excited ABout?

Surfing Santas Celebrate Aussie Christmas

surfing_santas_aldi.png

The celebration of Christmas is usually filled with images of snow falling, sleigh rides, reindeers and all manner of winter wonderland. And while some Australians pine for that, grocery chain ALDI, with help from BMF. wants Australians to realize what they have right in their own backyard; sun fun and, yes, Surfing Santas.

Of the work, BMF ECD Carlos Alija said, “A lot of Australians think the European Christmas is special, more magical. But trust us. The grass is not greener. It’s actually buried under an inch of ice. Australians have the best Christmas in the world and we wanted to celebrate that by creating a new icon: the Surfing Santa”.

And, hence, we have surfing santas. Have a look.
