'Facebook is a toilet': Watch John Oliver's hilariously harsh PSA for developing nations


On Sunday’s edition of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver devoted his signature extended rant to Facebook’s international expansionand, more specifically, some of the many ways the social network has screwed up on the path to global domination.

In the nearly 20-minute segment (which, as always, features strong language, so wear headphones if you’re watching this at work), Oliver says that “for years, Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg pushed his utopian idea that all connections are good connections with feel-good ads,” and then shares clips from those ads. “Unfortunately, thinking things through has never really been Facebook’s strong point,” he continues, before drilling down on what he calls the company’s “hugely consequential mistakes” in foreign countries.

“For the worst distillation of what Facebook can do to a country,” he says, “just look at Myanmar.” Oliver details the country’s “long history of religious and ethic tensions” and the military’s “ethnic cleansing” of the Rohingya, which has caused an estimated 725,000 of them to flee to Bangladesh and a “conservative” death toll of 10,000. “By all accounts,” Oliver statesciting various news reports and a U.N. study”Facebook absolutely did inflame preexisting tensions there” and was woefully ill-prepared to deal with the rise of hate speech on its platform Myanmar.

No 'Big Bang' for Fall TV season as opening night kicks off mostly with a whimper


The 2018-19 broadcast TV season officially kicked off on Monday night, and while recent upheavals in the executive ranks have conspired to put something of a damper on the opening-night revels, for advertisers it was business as usual. Viral Video Chart: Make it, don't break it


Dior, Samsung, Apple, and Ford all have campaigns on this week’s chart that introduce new products, but only one ad stands out for us: Samsung’s “/make” (at No. 7) that pitches its series showcasing how creators use Samsung products to make art. Its driving beat, fast edits and cool shots convey a real sense of creative ownership, a perfect match for its subject.

We’re also partial to No. 3, T-Mobile’s “T-Mobile Has You Covered,” an admittedly slick short about a dad, his little kid, and a super-hero costume come to life. We just think the dad and son are super cute. Thank you, casting.

Nike, riding a hot streak even before Kaepernick ad, reports smoking sales


Early returns on Nike’s controversial Colin Kaepernick ad show that it gave the brand a sales boost. But the company was already riding a hot streak before it debuted on Sept. 3.

Nike on Tuesday reported that revenues in the quarter ending Aug. 31 jumped 10 percent over the year-earlier period to $9.9 billion, driven by double-digit international growth, international performance and what the company characterized as strong momentum in North America. Net income for the period was $1.1 billion, a 15 percent rise over the year-earlier period.

Executives avoided discussing the Kaepernick ad on a conference call until questioned by analysts, and even then CEO Mark Parker avoided mentioning the former San Francisco quarterback by name. But Parker expressed a vote of confidence in the campaign, which was broadly seen as Nike supporting NFL players who kneel during the national anthem to protest social inequities.
