Subway: Live Feed

In a campaign concept developed by J Walter Thompson Sydney that went to 60 countries, more than 40,000 Subway restaurants recently invited customers to join the Subway Live Feed to help fight hunger around the world.

The real-time data-led Subway Live Feed campaign, was devised by J Walter Thompson Sydney specifically to celebrate World Sandwich Day and saw Subway partnering with local hunger-relief charities. 13.3M meals were donated to charity across the globe as a direct result of the campaign.

For every Sub bought, Subway gave a meal to someone in need through partner charities. Meals donated on World Sandwich Day were tracked through the Subway Live Feed digital ticker in real time.

For the majority of participating countries, a live API sourced from Subway’s point-of-sale devices at the restaurants was used to demonstrate in real time a country-specific and global live tally of the number of meals that Subway was giving to charity.

Individual countries displayed their tally on their campaign microsite, on digital banners and on dynamic outdoor billboards around the world, including 42nd Street, NYC. Word was also spread via social.

J Walter Thompson Sydney won the Subway World Sandwich Day business in a global pitch against agencies from Canada, UK, USA, MEA and LATAM in August.

Cyber Monday Sales Up 16%, But Hottest Deals Were Gone Before Day Even Began

So much for Cyber Monday. After robust online sales during Thanksgiving and the holiday weekend, many retailers continued to pile on the deals on Monday morning with promises of 15 and 25 percent discounts across the board at marketers including Toys R Us and Target. Sounds great in theory.

Here’s the rub: Many must-have holiday items were already sold out, snatched up by eager shoppers browsing from their couches over the weekend.

Those shoppers who waited for the best deals on the season’s hottest toys and electronics received a rude awakening on Monday as they saw first-hand the results of tighter inventory management from struggling department store chains. Many hot toys touted by retailers, like last year’s must-have item Hatchimals and a new LOL Big Surprise ball, were unavailable online. Fingerlings, interactive finger puppets, were sold out at Walmart despite the brand promoting such exclusives last month.

Gun Sellers Rebound a Bit Thanks to Black Friday Retailer Blitz

Black Friday was a blockbuster for the gun industry.

While no exact count of firearms sold in America exists, a common barometer is the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. This year, the FBI said it received just over 203,000 requests on the mega shopping day, up from 185,713 last year and twice as many as in 2008.

This spike comes during a lull for the firearms industry. In past years, sales predictably increased after mass shootings. But the killing of almost 60 concertgoers in Las Vegas on Oct. 1 failed to light the usual fire under gun enthusiasts fearful of new regulations, or of being unarmed in future shootings. The combination of a Republican president and Congress may be helping to dissipate the usual knee-jerk reaction, according to an analysis of background check data by Bloomberg. In fact, after last year’s election, stocks of gun companies sank: American Outdoor Brands, formerly Smith & Wesson, has seen a double digit stock decline since the presidential election.
