Why Cannes Is Courting China. Plus: Three Mainland Agencies to Watch

Cannes this year will include a China Day, when classical pianist Lang Lang will muse about music, marketing and brands. Papi Jiang, an online celebrity whose microblog has 23 million fans, will spill secrets of viral content. Chinese internet giant Alibaba Group is sponsoring the Lions Innovation speaker lineup. Its rival Tencent set up an account for the festival on all-purpose app WeChat, where Chinese attendees can buy delegate passes and ask festival organizers questions in their own language.

The festival generated total revenue of $72 million last year. There’s growth potential in courting the Chinese market, especially as global ad players like WPP look to cut costs at Cannes. China is the world’s second-biggest ad market after the U.S., but it’s still underrepresented at major global festivals. Plus, China has giant internet companies interested in soaking up more ad dollars from global brands, as well as its own big local agency groups — both of which can sponsor or host Cannes events.

There are signs that China is getting more interested in the festival too: Cannes awards entries from the country were up 10% last year to 1,022, and delegates increased in number by 12% to 328. In terms of awards, expect more of those too. China won just nine Lions last year, on par with markets a fraction of its size such as Romania, the Czech Republic, Portugal and Italy. In better years, China has won far more Lions.

Going Both Ways: Doing Cannes as Agency and Client

Cannes may have been built for agencies, but clients are the real stars now. Too bad there’s a price to stardom, as marketers including Kim Kadlec well know. The former Johnson & Johnson executive was recently in charge of global clients for Publicis Groupe, but returned to the client side with Visa late last year as senior VP-global marketing platforms.

Now as Cannes looms? “It’s total invitation overload, and it’s incredibly important to have a discipline around what strategy you’re going to have for that year, what are three or four things to focus on,” Kadlec said. “You can literally do meetings every half hour from morning to night and not scratch

the surface.”

HotelTonight to New York: Get a Room!

If you are looking for a one-night stand, HotelTonight wants your business — and is not embarrassed to say it. Flush with new marketing dollars, the hotel room booking app is running an outdoor campaign targeting local and regional residents in the New York City area rather than long-distance travelers.

Slogans urge people to make last-minute overnight plans, including some that have a steamy undertone. “Keep the night going,” says one ad, while another ad asks, “What happens after the after party?” Others are more practical, such as “Book some personal space” and “Skip the commute” — an attempt to get people to spend money on a room rather than endure a train ride back to suburbia.

“Have fun in your own city. Explore your own home,” HotelTonight Chief Marketing Officer Ray Elias said, summarizing the campaign. Does that include trysts? “Absolutely,” he said, laughing. “We are having fun with the brand. We are cheeky. We will say it like it is and we are not shying away from that. We are a challenger brand so we’ve got to set ourselves apart.”
