How Counterfeiting Shapes Brand Creation in China

Early on in its digital life, Chinese ecommerce liked to copy. It took digital business models from other, more mature companies, such as PayPal and eBay. More recently, however, Chinese ecommerce has been developing in radically new ways — ways that are unique and invisible to brands without experience in the country. Examples include mobile malls, widespread micropayments and bridges between physical and digital commerce.

You might think that makes China a glimpse of the future for the rest of us, and to a degree it does, but not in the way you’d expect. So You're Going to Transform Your Business? Who's Going to Staff It?

One of the hottest areas in marketing is business transformation, but the companies in the space aren’t often equipped to find the talent for marketers to help execute the solutions. Flock Associates and executive search firm Grace Blue are out to fill that gap with a strategic partnership.

Flock works with marketers to get their structures and processes in place, while Grace Blue helps brands and agencies bring in chief marketing officers, creative talent and other high-level hires. One of Grace Blue’s recent talent placements includes Ari Weiss, who joined DDB as North American chief creative officer in February.

Last year, McDonald’s brought in Flock to change the way it works with agencies and “set up to win for this very complex world we’re living in,” former McDonald’s USA Chief Marketing Officer Deborah Wahl previously told Ad Age. Flock worked with the fast-feeder to build a new agency ecosystem, or “the agency of the future,” which resulted in Omnicom creating a dedicated shop named We Are Unlimited. The agency, led by DDB, brought in talent from other Omnicom shops, as well as The Marketing Store (TMS), Facebook, Google, Twitter, Adobe and The New York Times’ T Brand Studio.

How Quicken Loans' New CMO Moved from Fiat to Home Finance

Mortgage marketing can be trickyQuicken Loans learned that last year when the Detroit company was hit with social backlash for over-simplifying the loan process in its first Super Bowl ad, earning comparisons to the subprime lending crisis of 2008. It’s something that weighs heavy on the mind of Casey Hurbis, Quicken’s new chief marketing officer.

Hurbis returned to his Detroit hometown in April after six years with Fiat, where he led the auto brand’s North American brand communications and advertising. Former Quicken CMO Jay Farner was promoted to CEO in February and Hurbis is now tasked with spearheading the company’s new confidence campaign to promote its Rocket Loan online product, which rolls out Monday.

“I don’t care if we’re selling mortgages or carswhen you’re making your first or second purchase decision in your life, there’s always scrutiny and hesitancy,” Hurbis said, noting that Quicken has a robust social response team to interact closely with clients.
