Watch the Newest Ads on TV From Nike, eBay, PlayStation and More

Every weekday, we bring you the Ad Age/iSpot Hot Spots, new and trending TV commercials tracked by iSpot.tv, the real-time TV ad measurement company with attention and conversion analytics from 10 million smart TVs. The New Releases here ran on TV for the first time yesterday. The Most Engaging ads are ranked by digital activity (including online views and social shares) over the past week.

Among the new releases, when Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson wears his Nike Alpha Menace Elites, something weird and magical happens (spoiler: picture the gridiron turned into a literal roller disco). EBay positions itself as an totally exciting place to shop (Adrianne Pasquarelli has the backstory over at Creativity: “EBay Paints Itself as Colorful Contrast to Amazon”). And Shaquille O’Neal gets punked by Kobe Bryant at a (faux) press conference for the newly released PlayStation NBA 2K18 Legend Edition.

Snap Said to Buy Placed for $125 Million to Track Ad Effects

Snap Inc. has acquired Placed, a startup that measures the offline success of digital advertising campaigns, for about $125 million, according to people familiar with the matter.

Including stock payouts, the full value of the deal could exceed $200 million, said two other people with knowledge of the deal, who asked not to be named because the terms aren’t being disclosed. Snap confirmed the acquisition on Monday, while declining to comment on the price.

The acquisition will help Snap expand its efforts to show that ads on its photo and video-sharing app Snapchat are driving users to stores. Placed, based in Seattle, will continue to operate independently, with David Shim, the startup’s chief executive officer, reporting to Snap’s chief strategy officer, Imran Khan.

Macy's Unveils Marketing Strategy Under New CMO

Consumers shouldn’t expect to continue to see blizzards of markdowns and Sales! Sales! Sales! at Macy’s anymore.

The struggling department store chain is switching up its broad promotional messaging to communicate more tactically, the brand said Tuesday at its annual investor conference. In addition, the $25 billion retailer will also explore changing the mix of media that it uses, try to improve its fashion cred with customers and introduce a new loyalty program at the end of the year.

The changes are part of the new marketing positioning from Richard Lennox, an ad industry veteran who joined Macy’s as chief marketing officer last year from Toys R Us.

AB InBev Buys Stakes in Craft Beer Sites, Provoking a Backlash

Anheuser-Busch InBev has quietly moved into the digital publishing business with a series of investments in websites that cover beer culture and the rising craft beer industry. But the slow move by the nation’s largest brewer into the editorial business is raising conflict-of-interest questions and causing blowback in the boisterous craft beer community.

The complaints began coming last week when it was disclosed that AB InBev took a minority stake in RateBeer, a site that publishes consumer-driven beer ratings and stories on beer culture. The investment, by the brewer’s incubator and venture capital unit ZX Ventures, took place in October but only drew notice last week after after it was discovered by another craft beer beer news site, Good Beer Hunting.

ZX Ventures also funds a beer culture magazine called October that was introduced in January by Pitchfork, the music site owned by Conde Nast.

Apple: Appocalypse

On Monday June 5, a new film titled “Appocalypse” kicked-off Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The film uses levity to illustrate our daily reliance on apps and how they make even the most mundane tasks easier and more enjoyable. But, more importantly, it underscores the crucial role that Apple developers play in our society.

What would the world be like without apps? How would we navigate without Waze? Who would we date without Tinder? Appocalypse begins with a newly hired Apple employee temporarily seated in a server room. When he accidentally unplugs the App Store server, he triggers a chain reaction causing apps all over the world to disappear and civilization quickly dissolves into chaos. Without apps, people are left to search a black market App Store in search of app alternatives.

Look closely and you may recognize a few familiar faces including social media influencer Brittany Furlan, giving hard copies of her selfies away, and Tinder Founder Jonathan Badeen on display for his next date.
