Remember all that nasty stuff Trump said about Mexicans? Antonio Battaglia, a lawyer in Guanajuato, Mexico, took it to heart. And he decided to do something about it. “It was a nuisance for me so I started looking for a way to make an impact, not in a mocking or vengeful way, but in a…

Burger King Angers Belgian Monarchy With Cheeky Ad About King Philippe

In the immortal words of Omar Little, “You come at the king, you best not miss.” Over the weekend, Burger King sought to promote the late June opening of its first Belgian outlet with a campaign poking a bit of fun at Belgium’s King Philippe. The royal family was very much not amused. “We told…

Missing the Point: $100 Billion in Loyalty Points Are Unclaimed

As more consumers participate in brand loyalty programs, more of those loyalty points are going unclaimed — to the tune of $100 billion, according to marketing firm Bond Brand Loyalty.

The problem for marketers is that if consumers aren’t taking advantage of the points they’re accumulating by cashing them in, they may not have a positive view of the program. (Worse, unclaimed rewards create a financial liability for brands.)

There are number of reasons why such bounty is left sitting in wallets. It is in part a question of educating consumers: Some brand loyalty marketers are failing to communicate reminders about redeemable points to program members.

Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers "Assault' (2017) :30 (Canada)

This spot wants you to imagine a world without crime. In this case, a shadowy figure lurking under a tunnel is actually just a maintenance worker. Crime Stoppers have been around for decades in British Colombia. Their aim is to encourage people to say something if they see something. namely by anonymously submitting tips to www.solvecrime.ca, via text at BCTIPS-27463 or by calling 1-800-222-8477. And while that is a great cause, the “imagine a world without,” is as familiar as “don’t you wish everything was made like,” as a direction. What’s worse there’s a bit of a disconnect with the main idea. The whole spot is a misdirect. No crime ever happens. The woman is never in danger. It seems like there should have been VO on here to at least say something like “we’d all love to live in a world without crime, but..” or “until we can live in a world without crime there’s…” basically it’s just needing a thought to tie it all together, I think.

What China's Live Streaming Crackdown Mean for Marketers

Chinese authorities are cracking down on live streaming platforms and video producers this week in a hunt for content deemed too sexy, violent harmful to youth or even superstutious.

The Culture Ministry there has said that it shut down 10 hosting platforms entirely. Authorities banned 547 live streamers and ordered 30,235 accounts to shut down, part of an ongong clampdown on the live streaming space.

There’s big money involved in live streaming in China, with Credit Suisse putting the market at over $3.6 billion last year. Brands have been tapping into it too. Business intelligence firm L2 said that about 80% of beauty brands it tracked had used it last year.

Watch the Newest Ads on TV From M&M's, Taco Bell, Jeep and More

Every weekday, we bring you the Ad Age/iSpot Hot Spots, new and trending TV commercials tracked by iSpot.tv, the real-time TV ad measurement company with attention and conversion analytics from 10 million smart TVs. The New Releases here ran on TV for the first time yesterday. The Most Engaging ads are ranked by digital activity (including online views and social shares) over the past week.

Among the new releases, Taco Bell says it might be giving away Doritos Locos Tacos — provided a certain NBA-related thing happens (watch the ad to find out what). Jeep serves up a summery music-video-style spot with a beach performance by Marc Scibilia (singing “On the Way”). And in an ad from candymaker Mars that celebrates its sponsorship of Red Nose Day, the red M&M proves that he’s kind of an idiot.

Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers "Gangs' (2017) :30 (Canada)

Imagine a world without gangs. Did you do it? Great. Now go back to your gang-ridden world and do something about it. Like anonymously submitting tips to www.solvecrime.ca, texting BCTIPS-27463 or calling 1-800-222-8477. I’m not the hugest fan of misdirect spots. It’s also a bit weird because if I’m supposed to imagine a world without crime, the guy clearly seems afraid something will happen to him.

Amazon Shares Hit $1,000 Thanks to Its E-Commerce and Cloud Dominance

Amazon.com Inc.’s shares topped $1,000 for the first time this morning, marking a new milestone for a company wooing investors by dominating online commerce and cloud computing.

Amazon shares hit $1,001.20 in New York Tuesday, up about 40% from a year ago and more than double the 15% gain of the S&P 500 Index in the same period. Investors are thinking about how much further Amazon can grow as it tries to replicate its U.S. success abroad.

The shares will likely push even higher since Amazon is growing so quickly in massive global industries that show no signs of slowing, as shopping habits change and businesses rethink how they deploy technology, said John Blackledge, analyst at Cowen and Company LLC, who recently upped his Amazon price target to $1,125 a share.

My Banned Words for 2017

Just for fun, here is a list of buzzwords, biz speak, and hipster droppings that should be banned from every business meeting forevermore. In my last banned word rant in 2014, I opined about a proleptic conversation that began,

Client: “Our Big Data Rock Star ideated a cloud-based, scalable, native programmatic tool set that produced excellent learnings.”

Me: “Well, it sounds like he took it to the next level efforting 110% to craft a best practices, robust solution you can leverage, and it’s clearly out of the box thinking but maybe you shouldn’t try to boil the ocean it’s got a lot of moving parts and I’m not sure it’s something you want to take ownership of. You might be accused of punching the puppy, so the optics are all wrong. We should probably put this in the parking lot.”
