Kia Motors: Work Blind Spot

Online
KIA Motors

The idea was inspired by one of the technological innovations of Kia cars, called Blind Spot – a feature that identifies vehicles that are outside the drivers field of vision. With this in mind, the creative duo responsible for the account decided to replicate this experience digitally, and designed a plugin for Google Chrome browser. This plugin’s main feature would be to protect the user from screeners; – people who can never resist looking at the screens of others to see what they are doing.

Judge Campbell denies Gawker's motion for new Hulk Hogan trial. Will not reduce $140m damages

Judge Campbell has denied Gawker’s motion for a new trial, and will not reduce the $140m damages, so gawker will have to pay up. Or bankrupt. Whichever comes first.

Judge Campbell denies Gawker’s motion for a new trial. She will not reduce the $140m damages at all. #hulkvsgawk— Anna Phillips (@annamphillips) May 25, 2016

Interestingly as this is happening, The New York Times Andrew Ross Sorkin has been floating a theory that Peter Thiel has bankrolled Hulk Hogan’s suit. NYT knows this because they have an anonymous source:

“Peter Thiel, a billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist, helped fund the case brought by the wrestler, Terry Gene Bollea, better known as Hulk Hogan, against Gawker, said a person briefed on the arrangement who spoke on the condition of anonymity.”

That’s very interesting, we’ve seen anonymous sources before, such as in the Rolling Stone “Jackie” story, where her claims were not double-checked with the fraternity she accused of gang rape. Similarly the article in the NYT does not mention having sought comments from Peter Thiel. Mr Denton is said to have phoned Mr. Bollea’s legal team, and they – naturally – refused to comment. Because opposing legal council do not chat with people that they are suing. Mind boggling.

So while the judge in Florida has cemented the verdict, Gawker’s name travels the reporting pages garnering sympathy as someone rich and powerful has allegedly payrolled to take them down a notch. It couldn’t be because Gawker is a blight to the internet and a cancer to modern “journalism”.

See how far that story has spread now, CBC news Canada “Peter Thiel bankrolled Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit against Gawker, reports say”, Gawker: Reports: Tech Billionaire Peter Thiel Secretly Bankrolled Hulk Hogan’s Lawsuit Against Gawker, Marketwatch Is billionaire Peter Thiel secretly bankrolling Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit against Gawker?, and Forbes This Silicon Valley Billionaire Has Been Secretly Funding Hulk Hogan’s Lawsuits Against Gawker.

I love how some of the headlines are questions. You know the rules, the answer to question headlines is always “No.” I also love the timing of these headlines, all based on a single anonymous source. They’re touting a conspiracy, while looking like one.

It’s not over yet. Gawker has already stated that they plan to appeal the jury verdict to Florida’s Second District Appeals Court, where Gawker is confident it will win.

Just spoke to @va_shiva, whose lawsuit against Gawker was also brought by Charles Harder. He says Thiel has “zero involvement.” #hulkvsgawk— Tom Kludt (@TomKludt) May 25, 2016

Old Irish – 100% Real Virtual Reality Irish Trip (2016) (Georgia)

Old Irish - 100% Real Virtual Reality Irish Trip (2016) (Georgia)
In Georgia, the tagline for is Old Irish “100% Irish”. To promote it Leavingstone built a bar in a public square and had a woman tempt passers by with a Virtual Reality trip to Ireland. As the unsuspecting VR tourists were staring at scenic Irish landscapes in their VR goggles, an entire Irish pub was rolled up around them, and a scary looking big “Irish” bloke eventually told them to take the googles off. Shocked the VR tourists get to experience what it’s like at a pub lock-in, singing to Sinead O’Connor and crashing beer bottles over ones head. Okay, maybe that doesn’t happen in Ireland, but the pub culture is real, the beer tastes nice and that’s what these VR tourists will remember. 100% Irish indeed. Crazy stunt, guys – how did you not get drunk doing it?

Auxmoney – “Bike” – (2016) :60 (Germany)

Auxmoney - “Bike” - (2016) :60 (Germany)
Styled like a modern Easy Rider meets Sgt Pepper lonely hearts club band road movie, a man and his very enthusiastic glam Stevie Nicks wannabe are checking out a cool motorcycle at a gas station in the desert. The gas station owner, and really old man, is selling it and claims the marching band uniformed man can’t afford it. “I don’t have the money” he admits, “but they do!”

And on the scene arrive well over a thousand people on horseback. This groovy styled ad is supposed to entice you to not only spend beyond on your means, but to borrow from people instead of banks. It’s like crowd-sourced credit. That doesn’t seem scary at all, like these scenes will turn Mad Max like quicker than you expect. Oh, did I mention the styling is great, even though riding on a motorcycle with exposed legs makes me grit my teeth how stupid that is? Why didn’t she get her own bike? And some pants?

BlueRock Editorial expands: hires editors Jim Helton and J.P. Damboragian

New York-based creative editing company BlueRock is thrilled to announce the additions of accomplished editor Jim Helton and rising star J.P. Damboragian to its award-winning editorial roster.

Jim Helton has always managed to move seamlessly between genres; working in a freelance capacity until now, Jim has built a repertoire that spans major motion features to short form spots. As a frequent collaborator of director Derek Cianfrance, Jim edited his narrative features The Place Beyond the Pines and Blue Valentine, among other projects. Jim’s latest film with Cianfrance, The Light Between Oceans, starring Alicia Vikander, Michael Fassbender, and Rachel Weisz, will hit theaters September 2016.

In the advertising arena, Jim has repeatedly been enlisted to bring together visual stories for top-tier agencies and brands; commercials for Honda, Verizon Fios, Grey Goose, and most recently Lipton and a 9-spot campaign for Goose Island.

Jim’s passion for the art of filmmaking is matched with a refined touch for whichever medium he takes on, allowing him to offer clients a multitude of different looks, ideas and solutions. Jim has dabbled in creating title sequences, and the opening sequence he created for Blue Valentine won both the audience and judges awards for Excellence in Title Design at the 2011 SXSW Film Festival. He also composes music cues, and several of his selections can be heard accompanying scenes of The Place Beyond the Pines.

At BlueRock, Jim looks forward to reuniting with Managing Director Liz Mason, with whom he’s worked previously, saying, “Liz and I have a wonderful sense of mutual respect and loyalty, and I trust her implicitly.”

“Jim’s experience as a filmmaker truly informs how he explores a story in the editing suite,” comments Liz. “It allows him to bring something to the project that consistently elevates it beyond what you expect it to be.”

Fellow BlueRock arrival J.P. Damboragian began his career at Crew Cuts, rising from messenger to assistant under renowned commercial editor Clayton Hemmert, and then making the leap to full-fledged editor on the Crew Cuts roster. After going freelance to broaden his experience, he became a go-to editor for Ogilvy & Mather. The advertising giant entrusted J.P. with a variety of projects, resulting in a great breadth of work that belies his relatively young career.

J.P.’s masterful ability to engage viewers on both a visual and emotional level has led him to tell a diverse range of stories for the commercial world. In the span of five years, J.P. has cut spots for clients like NASCAR, UPS, Dos Equis, Avon, Siemens, British Airways and more. In typical fashion, J.P. has already hit the ground running at his new home with an exciting new project for DDB.

“I couldn’t be happier to be on the roster at BlueRock and to get the chance to work on a wider variety of projects at another level,” J.P. said. “BlueRock’s capacity for recognizing talent combined with their proven ability to build an editorial brand makes me super excited for the future.”

“It’s evident in all J.P.’s work that he has a brilliant approach and touch to storytelling, whether it is scripted or non-scripted work. He brings an aesthetic quality to his edits that is developed far beyond his years,” says Liz Mason.

“BlueRock is incredibly proud to welcome J.P. Damboragian and Jim Helton into the fold. They represent what the future means to us, which is the ability to tell a story in a beautiful and compelling way, no matter the medium or length.”

Peter Theil reveals that he did indeed finance the Hulk vs Gawker case

In this NYT article: “Peter Thiel, Tech Billionaire, Reveals Secret War With Gawker” by Andrew Ross Sorki, Peter Theil reveals that he has indeed financed cases against Gawker. Elaborating on the why, it’s clear that Peter Thiel believes this is about deterring privacy invasion, not a personal revenge. The funding happened partly because “One of my friends convinced me that if I didn’t do something, nobody would.” Even millionaires like Hulk Hogan have difficulty mounting a case against a deep pocketed media company.

Mr. Thiel said that Gawker published articles that were “very painful and paralyzing for people who were targeted.” He said, “I thought it was worth fighting back.”

The Hulk vs Gawker case isn’t the only thing that Peter Theil has donated some of his cash to, he’s also concerned with journalism as a whole.

Mr. Thiel has donated money to the Committee to Protect Journalists and has often talked about protecting freedom of speech. He said he did not believe his actions were contradictory. “I refuse to believe that journalism means massive privacy violations,” he said. “I think much more highly of journalists than that. It’s precisely because I respect journalists that I do not believe they are endangered by fighting back against Gawker.”

He continued, “It’s not like it is some sort of speaking truth to power or something going on here. The way I’ve thought about this is that Gawker has been a singularly terrible bully. In a way, if I didn’t think Gawker was unique, I wouldn’t have done any of this. If the entire media was more or less like this, this would be like trying to boil the ocean.” Mr. Thiel said he had not targeted any other media companies.

Concerned about billionaires being able to fund cases they care about, I predict pearl-clutching in many papers in the coming days. Peter Theil on the other hand says that this is: “one of my greater philanthropic things that I’ve done. I think of it in those terms.”
