Citizens Bank Marks Retail Rebrand With Loyalty Push

Citizens Bank, the retail arm of Citizens Financial Group, is unveiling a new push this week as it completes a rebrand to extend its name in the Midwest.

The new campaign has a dual focus: spreading the word that Charter One, Citizens’ retail brand in Ohio and Michigan, as of today has been renamed Citizens Bank; and showing customers what it means to be a “citizen.”

The name change is part of a broader strategy, announced last year, to unify the brands under the Citizens Financial Group umbrella following the firm’s IPO. It extends the brand’s reach to 11 states in the Northeast and Midwest.

One Dorito In This Handful Could Melt Your Face

Brace your taste buds, America — Doritos is bringing its limited-edition “Roulette” bags to the U.S.

The packages include what appear to be regular nacho cheese flavored chips. But roughly one out of every six chips is super spicy, even though it looks like every other chip. Or as Frito-Lay Senior Marketing Director Jeff Klein puts it, “melt-your-face” hot.

Odds were good that PepsiCo-owned Frito-Lay would eventually sell the gambling-themed bags stateside after marketing them in several global markets, including Mexico, where they debuted in 2012. When Roulette launched in Canada last year, the publicity spilled south of the border, including in outlets such as Buzzfeed.

Millennials' Take on Budgeting is Fueling Prepaid Innovation

Millennials — wary of amassing debt and overdrafting their accounts — think about budgeting differently than previous generations and are turning to tools, like prepaid cards, to manage their spending.

The cohort is more likely than the general population to give themselves an allowance, for example, or hide cash from themselves to avoid overspending, on top of more common savings techniques like using coupons and shopping at discount stores, according to a study by TD Bank that surveyed 1,300 people from various age groups.

“Millennials have different financial needs than other consumer bases,” said Tami Farrow, senior VP-head of retail deposit payments at TD Bank. “The younger you are, the more the likelihood that you have emerging financial needs that require a different set of tools.”

Wells Fargo Embraces Diversity in New Brand Push

Wells Fargo is highlighting the diversity of its customers and its services in a new brand push called “Why I Work.” It is the firm’s first major effort since tapping BBDO to lead creative last year.

The first of seven spots that will roll out this week features a lesbian couple that is learning sign language to speak with a young, deaf girl they’re adopting. Called “Learning Sign Language,” it’s meant to highlight the unique, diverse needs Wells Fargo advisors help customers deal with every day. The firm, for example, has trained employees on how to advise same-sex couples and domestic partners since 2009, as well as people managing adoption and disabilities.

“We’ve been serving these communities, but we hadn’t really told that story,” said Jamie Moldafsky, CMO of Wells Fargo. “We understand that there are needs that are really unique to them. … We will only be successful if we mirror the community and population that we serve.”

Four Marketing Takeaways from Shanghai's Auto Show

In China, Jiangling Motors’ Landwind X7 will sell for about a third the price of the Evoque from Jaguar Land Rover. Jaguar chief designer Ian Callum already pointed out the similarities between the two cars on Twitter at another Chinese auto show last year.

But there’s apparently nothing Jaguar Land Rover can do about it.

“I really regret that all of a sudden, copy-and-paste is coming up again,” Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth said at the auto show, according to Automotive News. “There are no laws, there’s nothing to protect us, so we have to take it as it is.”

Here's the Next Ad Medium: Bike Lanes

PepsiCo’s Naked Juice is taking its advertising to a marketing road less traveled: bike lanes.

Beginning this month, ads for the brand began appearing along paths at a public park in Dallas and in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Negotiations are underway to bring branded bike lanes to Boston and Portland, Ore.

The approach is part of the “everything is media” strategy pushed by the marketer’s media agency, Omnicom Group’s OMD. While marketers have long slapped ads on public trains and buses, no one has targeted bike lanes on this scale, according to OMD.

ANA Forum Shows Advertisers, Agencies Far Apart on U.S. Rebates

Advertisers and agencies may be talking more about media rebates in the U.S. thanks to the recent controversy, but they’re sometimes far apart on the basic issues of whether they exist at all or how to monitor them. That much was clear from a “Transparency Town Hall” on Sunday at an Association of National Advertisers conference in Phoenix.

“There’s a lot of denial going on,” said Ana Jernestaal, assistant VP-finance for L’Oreal USA, which is reviewing its $2.3 billion U.S. media buying account. “We know [rebates] exist, but we’re sitting across the table from advertising agencies that are flatly denying it.”

The rebate issue raises fundamental questions about agencies, she said, including “are they negotiating on our behalf or not? Two, are they being honest with us?”

desicreative – Indian Advertising Creative Blog and Community (beta 1.4)

She hails from a small town, and was born to a doctor couple, having said that she is always extremely passionate about her own creative career path. She chooses to display her thoughts through her illustration work. Post her Architectural days she did her Masters in Design with a specialization in Animation from IDC, IIT Bombay. Now working as a freelance artist mainly into illustrations, 2D animation, comic art and painting.

Why are you an Illustrator?
It was child’s play in the beginning; I started writing the stories from my childhood and loved to read kids novels. Spent hours trying to understand the concept of story telling. Going ahead with the passion I choose to create my own illustrated world by story telling and drawing. After completing my Architecture, I got into IDC, IIT for my further studies in Animation. While working on concept art I realized the passion for Illustration and I made my illustration work my medium of communication. With the great admiration from my faculties I went ahead and illustrated my first Children’s book for Scholastic.

Did you attend school for fine art or design?
Not particularly for fine arts. I admire great work done by various artists. My inspiration comes from small day-to-day things or incidences around us. Animation taught me a great deal of understanding for the process, which helped me improve my skills in illustration.

You have a distinct style of illustration. How long did it take you to develop your style?
I wouldn’t say that I have one distinct style, though I want to create artwork and visual language of my own style. It is largely based on the subject and the need of time. Exploring various medium and style is my way of putting things forward.

Were there any particular role models for you when you grew up?
I think my very first inspiration for painting came when I visited Raja Ravi Verma’s art gallery. Frieda Kahlo and her work inspire me a lot! I love her surreal self-portraits painted in vivid colors and in relationship with nature.
Today, apart from my animation & illustration work I truly enjoy painting.

Who was the most influential personality on your career in Illustrations?
I grew up reading all the Marathi novels with almost no visuals in it but it helped to nurture my imagination! I also enjoy reading Tales of Hans Christen Andersen and illustrations from classic novels like Moby-Dick and The Secret Garden. All these classics motivate me to concentrate on small details of story while illustrating for storybooks.
I am a huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki and Anime has great influence on my creativity

What made you decide to become a freelance illustrator? When did you start freelancing? Do you illustrate for advertising?
After completing my masters in animation I got my first break in Illustration in 2011. While working on my first book I started getting freelance work for various publications. So far I have illustrated quiet a few children’s books and did animation for a campaign called “Beti Jindabad” by Actionaid.

Are many advertising agencies getting illustrations made these days? Do you work more with agencies or publishers?
My work was majorly done for publishers. I was always keen on Illustrating for children’s books, and I would love to explore more into visual narratives, and illustration for adults.

Was there any time when you wanted to quit Illustrations?
No. Never. I draw everyday and drawing is like breathing to me.

Have you considered turning your illustrations into toys?
Yes, I have already started working on my own toys and merchandising. I have few prototypes of my favorite characters. While designing the character I always imagine how it will interact with the real world.

Any other Indian Illustrators who you admire?
There are so many, everyone is great at his or her own work.

Do you have any favorite fellow illustrators or resources relating to your fields?
I admire my fellow illustrators work.

You have such a wide experience as a top working professional. What advice do you have for aspiring creative professionals? Would you advise them to take on Illustration as a career option? Is it paying well enough?
Illustration has to come from within; it’s an art form, which requires great imagination power, patience, practice and consistency. If one could accumulate all theses qualities he/ she can become illustrator.
It requires great deal of patience for money to start rolling in, though it’s more of work satisfaction then money.

What’s your dream project?
My current dream project would be something with graphic novels. I am working on my own stories that can be converted into graphic novel as well animation shorts!

Mac or PC?
Mac, anytime.

Who would you like to take out for dinner?
I would love to take Howl, Mei and Totoro for dinner :)

(*Characters from Hayao Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle and My Neighbor Totoro)

What’s on your iPod?
I prefer iTune radio – ambient music.
