As We Predicted, JWT London’s Alison Burns Lost Her Spot

Alison_Burns.jpg

The second we heard that Tim Hipperson, former CEO of RMG Connect (now part of JWT) was taking over at JWT London, presiding CEO Alion Burns would be getting a new job.

Luckily for her, she stayed with the same company. Unluckily, she had to move to New York in order to remain employed. But we’ve been to London, and it’s nothing to shake a falafel at. Nonetheless, we report to you today that Burns is headed stateside to act as Global Client Services Director. That’s four letters, not three, and only one of them is a “c” &#151 and since the remaining are consonants and not vowels (“e” & “o”) we presume she’s not happy about the shake up.

Rosemarie Ryan and Ty Montague will be her bosses, and Burns will remain on JWT’s Executive Committee. She’ll retain her current client responsibilities, which include the Diamond Trading Company. She’ll also work with Diageo, Kimberly-Clark, J&J and Nestle.

We’re sure she wouldn’t be the one to tell us such a tale. Was she happy about this? Was there a big blowout fight during the meeting leading up to this announcement? If you know more about this story, feel free to share the details. AgencySpy at gmail dot com, IM/Twitter AgencySpy.

Joint replacement seems cooler by the day

Smithnephew

This futuristic Smith & Nephew spot, produced by Psyop for Ogilvy New York, almost makes hip- and joint-replacement surgery look desirable. The visuals are like an updated take on the “fluid” F/X in Terminator 2, minus Arnold’s Austrian accent (though both share artificial body parts). The ad’s a bit trippy, and all that talk about “joints” reinforces the psychedelic overtones. It reminds me of stuff I’ve seen after ingesting too much high-fructose corn syrup. I spread it on candy, so I’ll need tooth-, gum- and probably brain-replacement surgery soon.

‘Zack and Miri’ can’t get ahead with MPAA

Zachmiripornposter_copy
The MPAA giveth, and the MPAA taketh away. Recently, director Kevin Smith successfully appealed the NC-17 rating for his new comedy, Zack and Miri Make a Porno. But a short month after Smith’s victory, the ratings board has put the kibosh on the movie’s first poster. The one-sheet will now be used only in Canada. While you can see why the MPAA got its puritanical knickers in a twist, you have to laugh at the “raciness” of an image in which two people are not only fully clothed but practically dressed for a Minnesota toboggan ride. Via Cinematical. Also check out the new Zach and Miri red-band trailer.

What’s that, someone defending Microsoft?

Mojave2

The Mojave Experiment, a Microsoft PR effort unrelated to the upcoming Crispin campaign, went live at the end of July. In a simple taste-test experiment, they asked people who had never tried Vista how they felt about Vista. Then they showed them a little demo of Windows’ new “Mojave” OS, which the participants liked, and revealed that it was actually Vista! Historically, this sort of campaign has been huge in the food arena, from secretly replacing Folger’s Crystals to the recent Pizza Hut pasta fake-out. But for an OS? The tech bloggers have been trading blows for the past month, making their allegiances known. Most of it is blatant Vista bashing. But for me, the most interesting thing I noticed trolling the forums is that Microsoft actually has a group of followers willing to defend it against anything. They may not be as loud as Mac lovers are, but they’re there, staunchly voicing their general approval of Microsoft. If MS could manage to band its existing fans together, it could have its own cult of devoted users willing to forgive anything, just like Apple has. Before any members of the Sacred Apple iOrder lynch me for the suggestion, consider this: How would you feel if Apple had conducted the Mojave Experiment?
