MasterCard CMO: You Can’t Separate Us From Our Agency

Alfredo Gangotena, the global chief marketing officer of MasterCard Worldwide, oversees a brand with a presence in 110 countries that, he says, touches 1 out of 3 consumers across the globe.

In an interview outside the Majestic Barriere in Cannes, he spoke to Ad Age about how creativity has taken on a life of its own within his company — and how a long-standing agency relationship can contribute to great work.

Mr. Gangotena also shared how MasterCard is playing an integral role in developing markets — such as Nigeria, where it is working with the government to provide people with a product that is a national identity card on one side and a credit card on the other.

WPP CEO Martin Sorrell on Advertisers’ Delayed Payments: ‘We’re Not a Bank’

WPP Group CEO Martin Sorrell doesn’t sound happy about some of the world’s biggest advertisers’ decision to regularly delay paying agencies weeks longer than before. “I don’t think our purpose is about banking — we’re not about a bank — or extended payment terms or agreeing to supply payment terms in low-interest conditions,” he told Ad Age in this interview during the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

Agencies that accept the marketers’ terms, though, could force others to follow suit. “You’re only as weak or as strong as your weakest link,” Mr. Sorrell said. “And if there are people out there who are prepared to take those risks, then obviously it will compromise the whole industry.”

Watch the video for more from Mr. Sorrell on that subject as well as creativity and the foolishness of a rival’s alleged guaranteed ad spending with Twitter.

Saatchi NY VP Gonda Heading to Droga5

We’ll try to make this quick, but yes, Droga5 NY confirms that Daniel Gonda will be joining the agency, effective July 1, as group account director. The inquisitive-looking Gonda has spent nearly the last three years as VP/management director at Saatchi & Saatchi’s New York hub. Prior to said Publicis Groupe-owned agency, the exec had fairly lengthy, familiar stints on the account side at the likes of JWT, Euro RSCG and TAXI. Gonda’s hiring comes on the heels of Droga5 nabbing TBWA\Chiat\Day NY alum Robert Valdes as its head of interactive production. We’re checking to see what the former’s position exactly entails at camp Droga. Should have an update shortly. Update: Gonda will be overseeing Droga5′s Coke Zero and Newcastle Brown Ale accounts.
