OKRP Holds Pet Focus Group for Big Lots

Chicago-based agency O’Keefe Reinhard & Paul has a new campaign for Big Lots, promoting its pet food and merchandise offerings with a focus group for pets.

Instead of writing a scripted ad, the agency got a group of pets together for “Pet Focus Group,” a digital video series. The videos feature moderators treating the group of pets like a focus group, with actors asking questions about Big Lots products and interacting with dogs, cats, and other pets. O’Keefe Reinhard & Paul chose to cast improvisational actors to interact with the pets, under the assumption that the animals would create funny situations on their own.

“We realized that instead of scripting this, it would be so much more fun to let pets be pets, and get really good improvisers to react in real time to whatever those animals are doing,” explains Sue Gillan, creative director at OKRP. And because you have these human facilitators in the room with the pets, they get to do the heavy lifting around uncovering the quality of the products without the event feeling commercialized. The result feels like a genuine discovery of the products.”

OKRP Works with Former Kmart ‘Ship My Pants’ for First Big Lots Campaign

Chicago-based agency O’Keefe, Reinhard & Paul wasted no time releasing their first campaign for Big Lots, after winning AOR duties for the company in late January.

OKRP worked with former Kmart CMO Andrew Stein(who was the man who of course led the infamous “Ship My Pants” campaign) on the new digital effort promoting the fact that Big Lots “ is now the official Hostess Thrift Shop.” The campaign, “#thriftisback” is centered around two Hostess-themed videos. “Mostess” is a 60 second spot featuring a group of choreographed moms dancing to a song name-checking Hostess treats. Yeah, OKRP definitely went the goofy route with this one. As tough as “Mostess” is to watch, the 90 second “Twinkie Time,” which features a car ride marred with an a capella Twinkie song, is just plain insufferable. (It could just  be me, as I have a strong aversion to a capella, but I don’t think so.)

“Videos are emblematic of the kind of quick-to-market, impact-driven and unexpected work that we are doing for clients who need to turn around campaigns yesterday,” explains O’Keefe, Reinhard & Paul CEO Tom O’Keefe. In addition to the videos, the campaign also features social media and digital marketing. Stick around for “Twinkie Time” after the jump (if you dare), and head on over to Big Lots’ YouTube page for more.  continued…

Big Lots Selects OKRP as AOR

Big Lots1

Less than three weeks after we first heard that Big Lots was parting ways with Barkley, which handled creative duties for the 1,400-strong retail chain for barely a year, the Columbus, OH-based brand has found a new agency partner in Chicago shop, O’Keefe, Reinhard & Paul. No word on who else participated in the review, but Big Lots chief customer officer Andrew Stein, who most recently led the development of “Ship My Pants” among other things while serving as CMO at Kmart, says, “Big Lots is engaging with our customer in new ways, and we were looking for an agency that understood our challenges and needs in a fast-changing marketplace,” noted Stein.  “We presented OKRP with a project, and they came back to us in a very short time with terrific ideas that aligned with our vision while proving their executional excellence and speed to market. They are a great partner for Big Lots.”

OKRP, if you recall, was launched by Draftfcb alums Tom O’Keefe and Nick Paul along with former Amazon exec Matt Reinhard nearly a year ago. Expect first work, which will initially be digital, from the agency for Big Lots to break in early February.

Here’s the Memo Regarding Draftfcb Chicago’s Biz Dev Director Shift

As noted above, we’ve just obtained the memo from sources regarding a changing of the guards on the business development side at Draftfcb Chicago. After spending a decade at said agency, most recently serving as VP/biz dev director, Jamie McGarry is moving on. Taking over in the role of what is now SVP/group management director, new business development will be 15-year DFCB vet Sue Redington. You can read the full memo from Draft Chicago president Michael Fassnacht, CCO Todd Tilford and Redington’s direct boss, group management director Mark Bellissimo to staff after the jump.  As for McGarry, sources say that she is headed to O’Keefe Reinhard & Paul, which was launched in Chicago earlier this year by fellow Draftfcb alums Tom O’Keefe and Nick Paul as well as ex-Amazon exec Matt Reinhard. Anyhow, read on if you so choose.

Yes, O’Keefe and Paul’s Agency is Now Open for Business

Last week, a bevy of banana-filled images had us wondering whether this was an odd preview of the new agency formed by Tom O’Keefe and Nick Paul, who previously served as North American CD and chief global growth officer, respectively, at Draftfcb.

Well, thankfully their new, Chicago-based shop is not called “Whiskey Bananas,” but in fact the more pro-sounding O’Keefe Reinhard & Paul (though the imagery of both spirit and fruit adorns the walls as you can see here). The Reinhard in the mix is Amazon alum Matt Reinhard, who takes on the role of founder/CCO at the new shop while O’Keefe serves as founder/CEO and Paul, founder/president. Today marks day one at OKRP, which you can find out more about here.

So, Is This O’Keefe and Paul’s New Shop?

Well, this is news to us. It looks like these photos have been making the rounds on Instagram and Twitter the past few weeks, but tipsters say these images signify that Tom O’Keefe and Nick Paul have “open[ed] doors to WHISKEY BANANAS their new ad agency” based in Chicago. If you recall, O’Keefe, a 20-plus-year ad vet, left Draftfcb two months ago and it was rumored at the time that he was lured by fellow former DFCB exec Nick Paul to help start up and lead a new shop. O’Keefe had been with Draftfcb since 1990 during the FCB era and last served as executive creative director, North America. Paul, meanwhile, spent five years at said agency and last worked as EVP/global chief growth officer before leaving last spring.

O’Keefe has actually been tweeting out somewhat silly pics such as the ones below with #whiskeybananas for some time now, but we’ll see what’s up and fill in the blanks when we can.
