360i, Oreo Craft Halloween ‘Nomsters’

360i and Oreo collaborated with designer Lori Nix and production company Dream Machine Creative directors for a Halloween campaign in which the brand will release a new “nomster” made out of Oreo and other confections every day.

The mad scientist creations were crafted and then filmed in a 32-by-64 inch “Oreo Laboratorium” set, designed to evoke Frankenstein, with over 100 props (many of them handmade). It’s a pretty adorable way to get the brand on people’s mind for Halloween, and its “snackable” size (the first video is 11 seconds) make it perfect for sharing on social media. The brand also offers people the chance to “Name the Nomsters” and will feature the best names in custom digital content later in the day. Oreo’s first “nomster” creation was unveiled today, a fusion of Oreo and candy corn to make a bat-like creature. So far naming suggestions include Dunkfluffula, Count Candy Corneo and Vamporeo. CP+B Gets Sweet for WeMo

CP+B has just launched the first ever marketing campaign for home automation company WeMo, taking aim at viewer’s sweet sides with a 60-second broadcast spot.

The spot, entitled “The Big Anniversary Rig” tells the story of a couple separated on their first wedding anniversary. To celebrate, the husband sets up an “anniversary rig” using WeMo’s automation, surprising the wife when she gets home with a series of romantic gestures accomplished using WeMo. Depending on your tolerance for sweetness, the spot may or may not be overly saccharine, but it’s a clever way to show WeMo in an emotional context. “The Big Anniversary Rig” debuted online today, prompting viewers to watch three separate “How Dan Did It” videos. It will make its broadcast debut on network television next month. (more…)

PKT Launches Learning Disability PSA Campaign

Publicis Kaplan Thaler teamed up with the the Advertising Council to launch a PSA campaign for various groups dealing with children’s learning and attention issues.

The campaign is designed to direct parents to the new website Understood.org, designed to help parents better understand their children’s issues and help them reach their full potential. In one broadcast spot, a man asks Siri, “How can I help my daughter with her reading?” and instead gets results for “Dachsund breeding.” It’s revealed at the end of the 30-second spot that the mistake was intentional:  “…I was trying to show you how Sarah feels every day. Frustrating, isn’t it?” before directing him to Understood.org. Broadcast spots also appear in Spanish-language versions. While comparing problems with voice recognition software to learning and attention issues may be a bit of a stretch, it also should get the attention of parents struggling to understand their kids’ problems in school and get them to the website.

“The crux of the campaign is that understanding is everything,” Larissa Kirschner, a creative director at Publicis Kaplan Thaler, told The New York Times. “Put yourself in children’s shoes and you can truly understand their frustration. We took the cultural phenomenon of Siri, a smartphone not always getting you, as our way in.”

The campaign also includes print, radio, and outdoor elements, as well as a social initiative that includes weekly Twitter chats for parents. The website itself attempts to educate parents through a series of videos and interactive experiences designed to simulate the experiences of children with learning and attention issues. (more…)

Cutwater Brings Intel to the Coffee Shop

Agency Cutwater teamed up with production company Cap Gun Collective for a series of comedic shorts promoting Intel’s Chromebook.

Set in a coffee shop, the shorts are based around the premise of computer problems happening in the real world. Unfortunately, the scenarios presented seem a little bit dated. In “Monotaskers,” for example, a woman at a coffee shop won’t let a man do more than one thing at a time, taking his book while he sips his coffee. “Frozen Coffee” presents a glitchy barista, which is funny in a way, but also seems removed from the current technological climate (as is the case with “Monotaskers”). Since, at the end of these spots, Intel’s Chromebook is presented as the solution, it’s as if Intel’s competition is presented as computers from the previous decade, rather than modern competitors. That doesn’t do a whole lot to represent the Chromebook in a good light, and leaves viewers with little reason to pick it up over its real-world competition. (more…)

Air New Zealand Returns to Middle Earth with ‘The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made’ from True

Air New Zealand, no stranger to well-publicized safety videos, is today launching “The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made,” created by agency True and directed by Kiwi filmmaker Taika Waititi, in anticipation of the December release of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

The airline has been cashing in on the popularity of Peter Jackson‘s Tolkien adaptations since his Lord of The Rings trilogy, and this latest installment marks the third themed effort for The Hobbit series (less than a year after the last campaign), and the second flight safety video. Shot over the course of six days, at numerous locations used in the filming of the series, the spot also includes appearances from Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins), Dean O’Gorman (Fili the Dwarf) and Sylvester McCoy (Radagast), as well as Jackson himself. As cheesy as might be expected, the ad will undoubtedly appeal to the kind of diehard Tolkien/Jackson fans who would plan a trip to New Zealand based around the films. It’s a much more sure bet than the controversial “Safety in Paradise” from earlier this year, as Middle Earth tourism has been a boon for New Zealand.

Director Peter Jackson was pleased with the video, saying, “Air New Zealand has created yet another fantastic video to celebrate The Hobbit films. This latest offering combines members of our cast and our locations with Air New Zealand’s unique personality.  I had a lot of fun on the set with Taika and the team and look forward to seeing the video on board.”

SpecialGuest Enlists Alex Sonnold to Climb ‘Heaven’ for Squarespace

Agency SpecialGuest enlisted professional climber Alex Honnold to take on a route in Yosemite known as “Heaven,” in free solo fashion, meaning no rope or protective gear for an ad promoting Squarespace 7.

While Honnold is one of the world’s preeminent solo climbers, “Heaven” is no walk in the park, even for him. Before the ad was shot he’d only taken it on once without gear, and describes it as “the most severe route you’ll ever climb.” Since it also affords the best views in Yosemite, Honnold was happy to take on the challenge. A 30-second version of the spot debuted during the World Series last night, but we’ve included the full length version above.

The spot is part of a larger campaign promoting the launch of Squarespace 7 and Alex also helped inspire “Shift,” one of twelve new design templates in the latest version of Squarespace. As you may remember, he’s also not a stranger to advertising, having scaled the GS&P building this June for Stride Health. (more…)

Little Girls Drop F-Bombs for FCKH8, Feminism

Activist t-shirt brand FCKH8 has stirred up some controversy with a new video that features little girls dropping f-bombs left and right (and seemingly having a blast while doing it).

The point of the profanity is that gender inequality should be more offensive than a child saying the word “fuck,” but it also serves to draw attention to the message, which otherwise offers up facts that aren’t anything new if you’ve been paying attention. The girls address such issues as the wage gap, objectification and sexual assault. The most shocking moment comes not from the girls use of profanity but when they say one in five women will be a victim of rape and sexual assault and then count off and wonder aloud which one of them it will be.

Unsurprisingly, FCKH8?s video has met with its fair share of criticism. The profanity proved too much for YouTube viewers, and the site has since removed the video. It lives on, however, at Vimeo, where the comments section is ripe with accusations of child exploitation (FCKH8 is a for-profit company) and open misogyny. Of course, the video was designed to stir up controversy and draw attention to the company, which donates five dollars from each fifteen dollar t-shirt to charities, so the backlash is entirely expected.

“Some adults may be uncomfortable with how these little girls are using a bad word for a good cause. It is shocking what they are saying, but … the big statistic that one out of five women are sexually assaulted or raped is something society seems to find less offensive than a little four-letter word, and we love how these girls draw attention to that imbalance,” video producer Mike Kon told Adweek.

Funnily enough, Adweek points out that FCKH8?s PR team couldn’t bring itself to be as brazen as the girls in the video, censoring the word “fuck” in its official press release.

adam&eveDDB, UK Slows Things Down for YouTube

adam&eveDDB, UK enlists the aid of The Slow Mo Guys in a new online ad in support of YouTube, directed by Jack Driscoll, released in both 30 and 60-second iterations.

Since, in recent years YouTube has seen some fierce competition in a market they seemed to solely dominate for a long period (namely Vine), using one of its most popular channels to promote the service makes a lot of sense. It also helps that the schtick The Slow Mo Guys employ is pretty handily explained in under 30-seconds but engaging enough to capture people’s attention. The Guys also tout YouTube as an interactive community by showing how they take suggestions for their show. This format works well for YouTube, allowing its stars to champion the format while also gaining free exposure.

Ant Farm Teases Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Release for Activision

With the release of Activision’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare coming up on November 4th, Ant Farm has released a 60-second gameplay trailer, the last piece in the long advertising onslaught for the game, which kicked off with a reveal trailer starring Kevin Spacey (who voices a character in the game) back in May.

Lines from Spacey’s in-game character hold together the trailer, along with gameplay footage and quotes from advanced reviews of the title, such as Forbes‘ “…transcends the line between game and film…” The spot highlights the changes from previous iterations in the franchise, touting a more important plot and improved multiplayer while putting the game’s improved graphics on display. Fans of the franchise have probably already put in their pre-orders but emphasizing the changes in the franchise could bring some newcomers on board.

“We’ve been partners with Activision on the Call of Duty franchise from its infancy, and over the years we’ve had the fantastic opportunity to see it grow to become the massive pop culture phenomenon it is today,” said Rob Troy, chief creative officer at Ant Farm. “This year, the graphics and the multiplayer aspects of Advanced Warfare took a huge leap forward, so the creative aspects behind this campaign needed to pay homage to that.” (more…)

R/GA LA Celebrate LeBron’s Homecoming for Beats by Dre

R/GA Los Angeles celebrates LeBron James‘ much discussed return to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a new campaign for Beats by Dre entitled “Re-Established 2014.”

The campaign is centered around a 2:15 ad crafted as a sort of love letter to James’ hometown of Akron, Ohio. The spot intersperses shots of the city, including signs in churches and movie theaters celebrating his return, with a shirtless James working out in an auditorium named after him at St. Vincent-St. Mary, the high school he attended in Akron, set to Hozier’s “Tale Me to the Church.” James wears Beats earbuds while working out, the only real nod to the brand in the spot. To add to the emotional impact, the voiceover is read by Gloria James, LeBron’s mother. “This is the city that raised you,” she says, “I’m so proud of you. Welcome home, son.”

Given James’ star status and the emotional tone of the ad, it was bound to attract attention. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the video has already received over four million YouTube views since its debut two days ago. Expect that number to balloon by the time the NBA season kicks off next Tuesday. Other, shorter supporting spots in the campaign highlight different aspects of Akron, LeBron’s upbringing and homecoming.  (more…)

This week marks the expiration of the Wright Amendment, a federal law governing air traffic at Dallas Love Field, Southwest Airline’s home airport. When passengers boarded the plane they each found a surprise gift under their seat, including a book of two-for-one deals and a free t-shirt. Then they played “Spread the Luck,” a game in which a spinning wheel selected a row to win prizes from New York-New York Hotel & Casino, including a suite upgrade. The airline saved the biggest surprise for last, with all passengers receiving a long list of items from the hotel and casino, including a free two-night stay. (more…)

Don’t Panic Celebrates Real Life Superheroes for Save the Children

Agency Don’t Panic collaborated with production company Unit 9 to explore sightings of superheroes in remote locations in India, Kenya and Mexico in a new PSA for Save the Children.

“She flies with the clouds and she gives water,” says one girl. “He came and destroyed the mosquitoes,” says a small boy. “She came and now we have a new baby sister,” another child adds. “Every child deserves a superhero,” reads text at the end of the ad, when it is finally revealed that the “superheros” in question are, in fact, Save the Children workers. It’s a touching message, as the PSA displays just how important a role Save the Children plays in the lives of children in need, who see their efforts not just as extraordinary but even magical.

The PSA is part of Save the Children’s “Race for Survival” campaign, timed to coincide with the UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. It follows in the footsteps of previous collaborations between Don’t Panic and Unit 9 for Save the Children, including “Most Shocking Second a Day” and “Reverse.” The two companies also collaborated for the memorable “Everything Is Not Awesome” effort for Greenpeace, which led to the end of Lego’s partnership with Shell.

Mekanism Gets Fired Up for Jim Beam’s Kentucky Fire

Mekanism has a new digital campaign for Jim Beam’s cinnamon-infused Kentucky Fire, entitled “#FiredUp.”

Made up of 15-second spots, Mekanism employs tongue-in-cheek humor to help introduce the new product with advice on how to enjoy it. In “The Slow Burn” for example, step one for “How to get #FiredUp” is to prepare your palette. Step two is to “take it slow,” as the spot shows a group of friends bringing a shot of Kentucky Fire to their mouths in slow motion. “The Kentucky Standard” makes things even simpler ( Step One: Order a round of Kentucky Fire; Step Two: Drink it), while “The Kentucky Tycoon” takes generosity to the next level. The ads will run on Jim Beam’s social channels, and “various online, mobile, social and experiential channels such as ESPNAOL, KargoViacom, and NBCUniversal” through early November. (more…)

The Richards Group Gives Fiat the Blue Pill

So how did Fiat make the new 500X? According to this spot from The Richard Group the answer is a certain blue pill.

The ad opens on a woman making amorous advances on an elderly gentlemen. He tells her he will be back in a minute, rushes to the bathroom, gets out a bottle of erectile dysfunction pills (presumably) and goes to take the very last one. But he misses his mouth and the pill falls out the window, slowly, and improbably, making its way into the gas tank of a nearby Fiat, which transforms the car into the new Fiat 500X.

And that has to be one of the most ridiculous premises for an ad to come across our desks in some time. The spot is beautifully shot, — in Pitigliano, Tuscany, according to Adweek, — but it doesn’t do a whole lot to sell the Fiat 500X, amorous glances of women following its transformation aside. Plus, if the Fiat 500X is the result of a Fiat on a certain impotence-treating drug, what does that say about the rest of Fiat’s vehicles?

Ant Farm Teams Up With Childish Gambino for Far Cry 4

DDB-owned agency Ant Farm teamed up with rapper Childish Gambino for a new Far Cry 4 gameplay trailer set to the Gambino track “Crawl.”

In a lead-in to the gameplay footage, Gambino discusses his choice of “Crawl” for the trailer while hanging out with friends playing the game. The Ubisoft logo then appears onscreen, and a variety of in-game action plays out to the track for the remainder of the ad. It does a good job of mixing a variation of game footage — from what appear to be cut scenes to actual gameplay — to keep things from getting monotonous, and the footage does seem carefully tailored and edited to fit the song.

“Our goal for this trailer was to emphasize the perfect pairing of the song and game, and give fans a memorable musical and visual experience that is authentic to both artistic groups” said Ant Farm  VP/Creative Director Scott Cookson. “The chance to merge cutting-edge gameplay footage with a unique musical talent was an exciting and welcomed opportunity to produce a unique and stylized film that is both memorable and compelling to the brand.”

DDB, Doremus Tout Benefits of Glass for O-I

Doremus and DDB Columbia have released a new campaign for O-I, the largest manufacturer of glass packaging in the world, touting the benefits of glass over cans and plastic.

While a campaign for glass bottles may sound like a pretty boring proposition, the agencies do a good job at keeping things entertaining. In the above spot, probably the best of the bunch, a group of friends get glass envy when they realize the shortcomings of clunking beer cans together. In other spots a man stranded on an island has poor luck sending a distress signal with a plastic bottle and a guy’s cardboard box of whiskey ruins his chances with a lady. While the spots vary in effectiveness and entertainment value they largely do a good job at showing the benefits of glass over other options in inventive ways. The ads broke online earlier this month and will extend to television in Colombia and Peru later this week. (more…)

Eleven Gets Strange, Creepy in Marathon Effort for Virgin America

San Francisco agency Eleven has a strange new campaign for Virgin America centered around an extremely long online video.

The ad, entitled “Have you been flying BLAH Airlines?” depicts, in real time, a flight on the imagined rival airline from Newark to San Francisco: a five hour and forty-five minute flight. If that sounds boring, well, that’s the point. It’s also a bit strange and creepy, since the passengers are all mannequins. There are long shots of the mannequins doing absolutely nothing in their cramped seats, punctuated by occasional “action” such as a woman devouring some ribs.

“There’s a very distinct odor coming from somewhere nearby,” says a man on the flight, while the woman goes on and on about the ribs she’s eating. And that’s about as much action you can expect as you (inevitably) skip around. Still, there’s actually a kind of strange charm to the ad and its surreal humor when taken in small doses, and you kind of have to appreciate the great lengths Eleven went to to make its point.

“The passengers have no choice but to be on ‘autopilot’ to get through the tedious journey,” Virgin told Adweek. “Just trying to watch the video is downright painful—and that’s the point. If you wouldn’t sit through the entire film, why would you pay money to experience it in real life?”

RPA Turns Nick Thune into ‘Brad, the Lyft Driver’ for Honda Fit

RPA is debuting a new online series promoting the Honda Fit with “Brad, the Lyft Driver,” a hidden-camera style video starring Nick Thune as Brad, an (overly) accommodating Lyft driver.

The series, directed by Fred Savage (Modern Family, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), shows Thune (in character as Brad) “maintaining a good vibe” while yelling obnoxiously out the window, rehearsing soap opera scenes with passengers, and creating creepy personalized mix tapes. While the antics can be amusing in small doses, the video stretches well past the three minute mark, overstaying its welcome a bit in the process.

As part of its “Fit For You” campaign, RPA is also teaming up with Vine stars Jordan Burt, KC James, Cody Johns and David Lopez for a series of Vine videos with each utilizing the Honda Fit in a video showcasing their individual style. (more…)

EVB Introduces Feline to Wearable Tech for 9Lives

EVB has launched a new digital campaign combining the Internet’s love of cats with the burgeoning phenomenon of wearable tech for cat food brand 9Lives.

In the trailer, EVB introduces Morris (the cat) to wearable tech, or, as his owner calls it “a face computer.” Morris seems pretty jazzed on the experience, impressed that it appears to know everything about him. It’s a bit on the cheesy side, but should appeal to cat lovers (and who else is watching an ad for cat food?). You can check out the trailer above, but for the complete interactive experience, including Easter eggs leading to 9Lives coupons and a Morris poster, head to the site. (more…)

Publicis Kaplan Thaler Brings BBQ to the People for Wendy’s

Publicis Kaplan Thaler recently launched a campaign for Wendy’s new barbecue offerings, entitled “#BBQ4Merica.”

The online campaign debuted with a kind of mock PSA, introducing Wendy’s new menu items as tackling the issue of “barbecue inaccessiblity” for people in places like Miami Beach, Cape Cop and Malibu. “Hi I’m a celebrity, and these are just a few of the geographically underprivileged places where millions of Americans don’t have easy access to quality barbecue,” says a solemn Carlton Alfonso Ribeiro in the ad. He’s joined by Ralph Macchio and Steve Austin for the effort, and the trio appear individually in a series of other videos for the campaign (stick around for a couple after the break).

In addition to the online videos, the digital effort includes a call to make barbecue the “National Dish of America” and an invitation to “sponsor” friends by tagging them on social channels using the hashtag “#BBQ4Merica” There was also a recent 24-hour tweet-a-thon event hosted by Ribeiro, in which participants helped unlock content and win swag.
