m:united Breaks Out the Carols in ‘Winter Wonderland’ for Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3

m:united has launched a new holiday spot for Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3, entitled “Winter Wonderland.”

As you might have guessed from the title, the 30-second spot makes use of the carol of the same name. And as you might have guessed from recent Surface Pro 3 ads, the spot is based on a minimalist comparison with Apple’s MacBook Air, visually limited to the computers in question and two pairs of arms. “My Mac is great, it’s so delightful,” begins the ad, with a reworking of the holiday carol sung in a somewhat grating voice. “So’s my Surface, it’s just as powerful,” answers a chorus, as the ad then goes on to list the features that make the Surface Pro 3 superior: the touch screen, digital pen, kickstand and detachable keyboard. By the end of the spot, the Mac booster is ready to make the switch to the Surface Pro. Somehow we don’t think most Mac fans will be quite so easy to convert.  (more…)

m:united Stages Laptop Dance Off for Lenovo Pro 3

m:united has a new ad for Microsoft’s Lenovo Yoga Pro 3 that takes aim squarely at a laptop from a certain popular competitor.

“Let’s Dance” opens with shots of the MacBook Air and Yoga Pro 3, as a “dance off” is staged between the two computers, set to the song “Neckbrace” by Ratatat. The spot then proceeds to tout the Yoga Pro 3?s superior thinness, tablet versatility, ability to form “the tent,” and touchscreen capabilities. “Game over” reads text at the end of the spot as the MacBook Air flips shut while the Yoga Pro 3 is going strong, deemed the winner of the “dance off.” Apple bashing is becoming one of the more tired trends in tech advertising, but m:united handles the strategy well enough here, finding an approach that’s a little more fun and less in your face than most by imagining the laptops squaring off on the dance floor. Still, m:united may want to change things up going forward, as this tactic can’t possibly have much more mileage. (more…)

McCann Australia Scares Up Another ‘Dumb Ways to Die’

Everyone’s favorite PSA campaign promoting an obscure public transportation system is back via McCann Australia and John Mescall (who you may recall was recently promoted to the global ECD role).

The PSA has gone well beyond reminding riders to be careful when entering and exiting the train; over the summer the animated whatever-you-call-thems helped sell insurance, and now they’re here to remind us that Halloween might not be the safest time of year for kids…we think?

First, the “trailer”:

This time, we might even call the campaign “experiential” since its YouTube page asks viewers to choose whether they want a trick or a treat.

McCann Promotes John Mescall to Global ECD

This morning McCann Worldwide announced that John Mescall will be its newest Global Executive Creative Director.

Mescall, who currently serves as ECD at McCann Australia (but did not appear in this brilliant piece of satire), will relocate to New York “in the coming months” to join fellow GECDs James Dawson-Hollis and Bill Wright; the move is part of McCann Global Creative Chairman Rob Reilly‘s efforts to consolidate and strengthen the larger agency’s creative leadership.

Reilly had this to say about Mescall, who led independent Australian shop SMART before its 2011 acquisition by McCann:

“John’s all talent and no ego and he has helped lead McCann Australia to become one of the best agencies in the world.”

The new GECD himself writes:

“It’s a seriously exciting time at McCann. The opportunity to work closely with Rob was just too big not to take, and we’re very aligned on the kind of work we seek to do.”

Mescall has earned a plethora of awards throughout his career, most recently scoring 5 Grand Prix for Metro Trains’ 2014 “Dumb Ways to Die” PSA campaign (which is now being used to sell life insurance).
