Matthew McConaughey and Jimmy Kimmel Made 3 Local TV Ads for an Austin Video Store

Matthew McConaughey and Jimmy Kimmel have taken it upon themselves to get some attention for an old-school video store in Austin, Texas, and they’ve created three hilarious local TV ads to accomplish this mission.

Vulcan Video is the kind of store that still rents VHS tapes, yet it has somehow managed to hang on in the digital age, and since Kimmel was in Austin for SXSW anyway, he decided to give back to the local economy by showing them what’s special about Vulcan Video—”other than the fact that it still exists.” (Vulcan was one of many submissions Kimmel received aftering putting out a call for a local business to stump for.)

So Kimmel called up locally based actor McConaughey to help by playing a role that’s, in part, an amalgamation of meta references to his past characters. It’s also clear that Kimmel’s writers wanted to parody McConaughey inexplicable, rambling Lincoln ads. Particularly in the third spot when McConaughey says, “No. 1, I like to drive; No. 2, I like to talk to myself when I drive.”

Vulcan Video is one lucky store to get three unforgettable, amusing spots that are doing their part to keep Austin weird.

ESPN Sends Off U.S. Team with Revamped ‘I Believe’

With only two days until the 2014 World Cup kicks off in Brazil, ESPN has released a revamped version of their “I Believe” spot (which we covered back in April) as a send off to the U.S. team.

The new spot, created in-house, augments the crowd chants of “I believe that we will win” from the original with celebrities — such as Kevin Costner, Ice Cube, Whoopi Goldberg, Jon Hamm, Jimmy Kimmel, and Andrew McCutchen — slowly working their way through the line. Unfortunately, the approach doesn’t really add any life to the blase anthem. If you’re a big fan of the team, you’re already excited for the World Cup to start. If not, ESPN’s latest spot won’t really do anything to entice you.

Here’s Some Coachella 2013 Perspective from a GoPro-Wearing, 6’7? Director/Designer

Since we’ve never been able to make it out to Cali for the annual, now-bloated Coachella festival (we went with “Couchella” this year), we’ll instead enjoy this birds-eye view–literally–from one Chris Crutchfield. The 6’7″ director/actor/motion graphic designer who strapped on a GoPro Hero 3 to give us a “Coachellavated” perspective of the musical extravaganza.

The project was creative directed by Scott T. Chan and produced by his L.A.-based creative studio Whirled, which is perhaps now best known for its annual “Zeitgeist” work for Google. Seeing as we’ll probably never make it out to Coachella though we’ve been saying otherwise every year, we will gladly take this three-minute diversion from the usual advertising news as we head into the late afternoon. Speaking of Coachella, Jimmy Kimmel and his crew getting attendees at this year’s fest to lie about liking bands that don’t actually exist.
