What is a Picture Worth?

There is a constant tension in creative departments regarding the value of copy vs. art. I’ll commit some old copywriter heresy and say when push comes to shove I’ll give art a small edge. Copywriters sometimes become a bit inwardly focused, whereas art is usually on target with the brand and messaging. Nothing is 100%, of course, but I find art to be a bit more reliable communications tool.

Off the Hook?

The dilemma: your client is strongly suggesting something that you know is, at best, ill advised. Do you just shut up and do it, or do you put a stake in the ground? My advice: do neither. Instead, ask for five minutes to calmly explain why their suggestion is misguided, provide an alternative with solid reasoning behind it, and let them choose. Then, of course, do your very best to execute the chosen path. You’ll likely be off the hook regardless of how things turnout and you will probably enhance the relationship.

Diva Creatives

We’ve all worked with this guy or gal. They’ve hit a few homers out of creative and now they can’t come to meetings, are short with clients, begin to dress even more slovenly, and become general pains. The best remedy for this is time. Once the inevitable strikeouts occur, hold a mirror up to your creative genius and remind him or her that we’re all in this together. Most will come off Olympus ready to play for the team again.
