PMK-BNC/Vowel Channels Iconic Dylan Moment for Audi

Bob Dylan Went Electric. And You Should Too, With a Plug-In Hybrid, Says Audi

A new hybrid-electric Audi is just like that time Bob Dylan shocked audiences by playing an electric guitar at the Newport Folk Festival, says Audi.

This new video from the automaker, a sponsor of the 2015 festival, interviews a mix of historical figures, like documentarian Murray Lerner, and modern musicians, like Courtney Barnett, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, and Colin Meloy of The Decemberists—artists who were part of the lineup at Newport this summer, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of famous Dylan’s 1965 show.

So, what exactly are the differences between a Fender Stratocaster and an Audi A3 Sportback e-tron, you might ask? It doesn’t matter, because when you’re driving around in your sweet $40,000 car, you’ll feel like a pioneer and a rebel cranking out creamy licks on your finely tuned instrument.

It also may be worth noting that while it’s widely believed audiences booed Dylan’s decision to go electric, that account is also disputed—other theories include that crowds were upset by bad sound quality, or the shortness of his set. But that’s nowhere near as good a story.

To be fair, the clip does include some charming rumination on music and its evolution. But the implicit message—”Don’t hate progress. Buy an Audi”—isn’t the most compelling song. Especially when other car marketers are making the case that fuel-efficient alternates can literally run on cow crap.

Miami Ad School Student Parodies Ridiculous Bob Dylan Chrysler Ad

Chances are you were watching Sunday night when Bob Dylan actually asked, in a Chrysler ad reaching over 100 million people, “Is there anything more American than America?”

It stands out, amidst stiff competition, as the most ridiculous line uttered during the barrage of Super Bowl advertising. The rest of the spot almost doesn’t even matter, since all people will remember is that one terrible line that begs to be parodied. And now it has been. A not as of yet identified Miami Ad School student created this parody using the footage from the Chrysler spot, dubbed with  their best Dylan impression waxing ridiculous on America. With lines like, “Cuz ‘American’ is America’s adjective, and sometimes it’s a noun for people in America” and “Being an American person? Well, that takes being a person in America” the parody does a good job at pointing out what’s so ridiculous about not just the specific Chrysler ad in question, but a whole genre of overly-patriotic advertising. Now if only we knew who was responsible…

We Are From LA Helms ‘World’s First 24-Hour Music Video’ for Pharrell

24happy1

Here’s something to amplify the TGIF feeling: We Are From LA, a directing collective from production company Iconoclast, has launched the “world’s first 24 hour long music video” for Pharrell Williams‘s new song, “Happy.”

24happy4

The song itself is simple, fun and catchy. We Are From LA’s interactive video allows users to switch between various dancers in different locations, at different times of the day and night. It’s a pretty cool concept, although it would be nice if switching between dancers was a little more fluid and seamless. The dancers in the video range from unknown actors to the very famous (Steve Carrell, Magic Johnson, Gavin DeGraw, Tyler the Creator, etc.) to Pharrell himself. Because of the nature of recording so much footage, they keep things pretty simple, which actually fits the mood of the song perfectly. Head on over to 24hoursofhappy and spend a few minutes checking it out (though we don’t recommend watching for 24 hours).

Between this and the new video for Bob Dylan‘s classic “Like A Rolling Stone,” it seems the age of fine-tuned interactive music video has arrived. Credits after the jump. continued…

A produção inclui, ainda, a Pulse Films e Walter Pictures.

Is W+K’s ‘Built Free’ Spot Advertising the 2014 Jeep Cherokee or Base Jumping?

W+K Shanghai’s new spot for the 2014 Jeep Cherokee “Built Free” doesn’t tell you much about what you can expect from the vehicle. In fact, you don’t even see the new Cherokee until around the 20 second spot — and don’t get a real good picture of what it looks like until almost 50 seconds in. Instead, W+K opts to sell viewers on a concept of the Jeep vehicle as a tool for freedom, as the “Built Free” tag exemplifies.

The spot makes good use of the Bob Dylan obscurity “Motherless Children,” and is well-directed, with the footage doing a good job of advancing the story the narrative tells of youthful curiosity losing out to the pressures of adult life. “People told you things: where to go, what to do, what not to do,” says the narrator, before implying that the Cherokee is the tool you need to “throw yourself at the world head first again.” It’s not the most innovative of strategies, selling a lifestyle associated with a vehicle, even if the sparsity of said vehicle (and no mention whatsoever of its features) in the spot is a little jarring. It’s easy to like the spot’s sentiment, but a lot harder to understand why the vehicle it’s supposed to be selling is largely absent.

Head of marketing for the Jeep brand Kim Adams-House told Autoblog that future ads for the Cherokee ”will speak to more” of the vehicle’s features. Still, you have to wonder about the strategy of selling a vehicle without telling viewers much about it — and hardly featuring the vehicle in the ad, for that matter. It might as well be a spot for base jumping, since that activity is given about as much screen time as the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. We’ll have to see where W+K takes the Cherokee’s “Built Free” campaign in the future, but a new strategy might be in order.

O line-up é promissor, né?

O Them Crooked Vultures juntou o todo-poderoso-do-rock atual, Dave Grohl com o mestre John Paul Jones, do Led Zeppelin e Josh Homme, do Queens Of The Stone Age. Só isso. : )

E deu nisso:

Vocalists Who Can Not Sing

KanyeWhen you are looked upon as an established singer or lead vocalist, chances are people would be pretty much expecting the best rendering ballads today. But the funny thing is that some of the best stars we see in the music industry may not even be making it big due to their voice but more on how they are marketed and look.

It is really surprising. Imagine big names like David Lee Roth and Bob Dylan tagged as bad singers and mainly lip-synch to carry their way to fame and fortune? Now that is something that they have to give credit to their promotions manager. In most shows, you would notice that lip-synching is common and hence, much of them are practicing singing along with music rather than actually rendering it.

There are two kinds of bad singers in the world: the ones who kid themselves into thinking they’re good (Kanye) and the ones who try too hard — all the time. These are the Mariahs, Beyonces, and Christinas (although Ms. Aguilera is learning; her Nina Simone tribute on the Grammy nomination show this month was remarkably restrained). These performers wring the last bit of life out of every note. Just because you can sing every octave perceptible to the human ear doesn’t mean you have to. These singers don’t know when to hold back.
