Pooja is a young Illustrator – Graphic designer. Although, 4 years of her creative career have been layered with branding & packaging, her core strength is illustration. She loves exploring things. During graduation she started her career as an illustrator at a design studio in London. After completing graduation Pooja came back to India and joined another studio where she mainly worked in packaging design. These few years kept her away from illustration. Unable to bear the gap, she changed the job and started working with HPS Group where they serve motion graphics, web and print related solutions to clients. During these 4 years Pooja switched jobs to explore new areas and learn design process within branding, packaging and now motion graphics. She also believes that she is a traveler at heart. She dreams to travel the world and draw her experiences and observations to illustrate a travelogue.
Why are you a Graphic Designer?
I’m an introvert and I found art as a medium to express myself. As a designer I always wanted to be in a place where I can use my design and illustration skills. So graphic design was the ideal combination.
Did you attend school for fine art or design?
My bachelors was in Applied Art and I graduated from University of the Arts, London with MA Illustration.
You have a distinct style of Design. How long did it take you to develop your style?
I love to play with lines, swirls, dots to capture minute details. People find my work intricate and engaging. It took couple of years to develop my voice in illustration. This is my core style, well I can say this is my identity. I always wanted to develop my iconic illustration style and I started working on it from my bachelors and in my masters I got a chance to give it justice. I am always open for experiments and I am very moody person, I cant stick to one. Nowadays I am exploring vector styles and isometry is my new favorite.
Were there any particular role models for you when you grew up?
There weren’t any particular role models as such, I grew up without any barriers and in an organic way. But I always wanted to be known by my work.
Who was the most influential personality on your career in graphic design?
People, stories & places around me inspired me the most. I love to make my illustrations narrative. I follow many artists and design studios on Instagram, Facebook and behance. I admire Malika Favre, Steve Simpsom, Alberto Cerriteno, Shaivalini Kumar, Abhishek Singh, Sanjay Patel, Hasrshavardhan Kadam.
We love your illustrations! What do you prefer more, illustrations or graphic design?
Always illustrations.
When did you start freelancing?
From second year of my bachelors.
Was there any time when you wanted to quit graphic design?
Yes! A year ago when I almost lost touch with illustration in my job. That time I wanted to quit graphic design and work as an illustrator
Are many advertising agencies hiring graphic designers? Do you work more with agencies or publishers?
Yes they do but I never wanted to work in advertising agencies. I always prefer design studios.
Do you have clients who give you steady work or do you advertise for new clients often?
Yea some of my clients give me steady work and new clients approach me through reference or behance and instagram.
Any other Indian graphic designers who you admire?
As I mentioned before, I admire Shaivalini Kumar, Abhishek Singh, Sanjay Patel, Hasrshavardhan Kadam.
What advice do you have for aspiring creative professionals? Would you advise them to take on graphic design as a career option?
I will suggest that if you are passionate about graphic design, then only take it as a career. Don’t choose it as a last option. Love what you do. Be your own critic and milestone. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your skills and to try different parameters.
Do you think Clients are opening up to keeping aside a decent respectable budget for design work? Do you think clients are understanding that they need to invest in Design as a communication tool and also to cut the clutter, and that good design comes at a price?
Yes they are but in traces. I believe its their requirements and most of the time they are because of the target audience. Our audience needs spoon feeding and once they become responsible it will automatically cut the clutter. Yea and obviously client should respect good design and the cost and the time.
