Beware the 'Authenticity Trap' When Marketing to Millennials

I have a mantra when it comes to marketing: Brands don’t influence people, people do.

In today’s complicated media mix, it’s imperative we embrace the art of messaging as a form of popular psychology, not as a fusion of “industry standard” tactics. That’s not to say it’s not our job to sell stuff. It is. Rather, progressive marketing acknowledges the wildly advanced state of mind today’s consumer possesses and, furthermore, pays respect to it.

The sophistication of the millennial generationthe largest and most diverse everis something few agencies, and even fewer brands, want to acknowledge. Not only are we not smarter than them, we’re falling into rhetorical pits that they’ve dug for us. The biggest example of this is what we can call the “authenticity” trap.

Twitter's NFL Live-Stream Numbers 'Underwhelm' Some Sponsors

Twitter shouldn’t do an NFL touchdown dance just yet, according to some advertisers.

The audience numbers have been called “underwhelming” by some sponsors of Twitter’s live-streaming of Thursday Night Football. One agency executive said that a client who sponsored the games could even ask for “make-good” ad inventory during future programs.

“We’re seeing a significant under-delivery from Twitter for our spots,” the agency executive said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The problem is people aren’t watching full games.”

Can Digital Experts Become the Marketing Experts That Agencies Need?

Organizations are spending countless hours and dollars to transform into digitally-deep, Snapchat-savvy marketers.

In lieu of a better plan, many have relied on hiring digital natives — or at least the “digitally immersed” among us — to teach everyone else how this new-fangled stuff actually works.

These employees spend their days servicing client needs, and their nights creating training programs intended to help their colleagues grasp the difference between DSPs, SSPs, DMPs and a host of other acronyms. (Ad Age just published some useful definitions here, actually.)

Experiments with Fonts : Wow Design

DesiCreative
DesiCreative – Indian Advertising Creative Blog and Community (beta 1.4)

Default fonts/ or standard fonts are those which are part of most software’s font library, and which never feature on designers list of favorite fonts. Fonts like Arial Narrow, Baskerville, Times New Roman are either overused or some never used due to is overtly classical form. This thought was unsettling me for a while and, I just decided to study some of these with a fresh perspective. When I started experimenting with the forms, the counters, the ascenders, the stem and the results were some stunning Typographical Visuals.  While my experiments were in Black and White, I believe right colors take typography to next level.
Sharing some of the Typographical Designs

Arial Narrow : Beautiful counterspaces.

BrushScript : The Flowy curves

Avenir Light : The lightness in the stems

Baskerville : The classic solid serifs

Cooper Black : Love the Os of Cooper

Agencies, Businesses Hunker Down for Hurricane Matthew

Miami ad agencies, and most other Miami businesses, closed today and many will continue working remotely on Friday, depending on how hard the area is slammed by Hurricane Matthew.

“We closed the agency [Wednesday] at 2 p.m.,” said Anselmo Ramos, founder and chief creative officer of Miami-based David, whose clients include Burger King and Coca-Cola. “We’ll be closed today and tomorrow. Everyone will just work from home these two days. So, as long as we have electricity, it’s business as usual!”

“We’d rather be on the safe side, so we decided to physically close the agency today and tomorrow,” said Jos Moll, founder and creative director of The Community. “We are online, working remotely, but we made it clear that the priority for everyone is to take care of their homes and families.”

Joma: Retro 367 the story of an advert

Joma: Retro 367 the story of an advert

Joma is turning 50 and in order to celebrate, they’re relaunching the original 367 design from the 80s. The 367 is one of Joma’s most iconic designs from the 1980s. 35 years later, they’ve decided to create the same trainers that were seen for the first time at the Footwear Fair of Berlin in 1981. In order to introduce the “new” 367, the brand has come up with a very 80s-esque campaign. Everything is from that decade, from the printing to the photography, down to the creative advertising professionals involved. The process was captured in a ten-minute documentary titled “The Story of an Ad”. The premiere of this documentary and the official presentation of this model in Spain took place on 29 October in a place that hasn’t closed its doors since that time and that still preserves all of its essence from that era, La Vía Láctea: the iconic nightclub from the “Movida Madrileña” (Madrid Scene). It hasn’t been easy, but Joma has managed it: they’ve made an ad as 80s as the 367. And there is nothing that sums up this campaign better than the print work itself: “We’ve worked hard to change as little as possible”.
