Brands, Agencies, and FIFA: Oh My!

Category: Beyond Madison Avenue
Summary: We are not here to cast FIFA and the sports marketing agencies in question in guilt. That’s not our place. Like the rest of the public, we only know what has been released. But for the brands that have partnered with FIFA, as well as the companies and brands that sponsor the huge tournaments, country teams, and the World Cup? We are sure they are waiting for more positive news.

Remastered and Patterned Historical Portraits Paintings

Carl's Jr. Makes the Most Absurdly American Ad for Its Hot-Dog-and-Chips Cheeseburger

Putting a hot dog and potato chips on your cheeseburger is the ultimate expression of American-ness, according to Carl’s Jr. So, this 72andSunny ad for that monstrosity—an official menu item called the Most American Thickburger—celebrates that patriotism to a ridiculous degree. And Samantha Hoopes in a stars-and-stripes bikini is just the beginning.

People are making fun of this particular cheeseburger, of course. Check out Jimmy Kimmel’s takedown below, in which he imagines the craziest item on the Carl’s Jr. menu—and introduces a memorable new tagline for the place.

BBDO Partners With One Club on One-Year Diversity Residency

The One Club is partnering with BBDO on a residency program that helps young multicultural creatives get a foot in the door.

While speaking at the One Club’s “Here Are All the Black People” career fair last year, BBDO Chief Creative Officer David Lubars decided he was going to tackle adland’s diversity shortage — which he has called “frickin’ embarrassing” — head-on with a creative residency program. The program, simply called “Creative Residency,” offers benefits and a year of employment at BBDO’s New York office.

JD Michaels, exec VP-director of diversity and creative engineering at BBDO New York, said Mr. Lubars didn’t take a corporate approach to creating the program. “He just said, ‘I’m just going to go hire some great people,'” Mr. Michaels said.

How Wendy's Is Building a Beefless Burger Brand for India

At the first Wendy’s in India, cooks flip spicy aloo crunch burgers and serve buns sprinkled with chili, turmeric and coriander. Where’s the beef? There isn’t any, since India’s Hindu majority considers cows sacred. The menu changes are big, but they’re just one aspect of how Wendy’s is reinventing itself for the new market.

Wendy’s debut outpost in Gurgaon, just southwest of New Delhi, has less of a fast food feel and more of a casual dining atmosphere, though prices remain low. (You can get a sense of the atmosphere in the Facebook video above, from VML India.) Meals are served at the table, on proper china plates.

That’s one differentiator from other Western chains catering to India’s growing legions of fans of beefless burgers. Market leader McDonald’s has expanded, Burger King launched in November, and bizarrely even Dunkin’ Donuts has gotten big into burgers, because doughnuts don’t have enough local appeal. The Times of India recently proclaimed that chains were on the cusp of a “burger war,” noting that Fatburger, Johnny Rockets and Carl’s Jr. are also new India entrants.

General Mills Adds Fallon, 72andSunny to Roster

General Mills has added more agencies to its roster, this time tapping Fallon and 72andSunny — a move that comes two months after the marketer named Wieden & Kennedy the lead agency on Yoplait.

Publicis Groupe’s Fallon will take on creative duties for Old El Paso, while MDC’s 72andSunny will handle the Totino’s pizza brand. Totino’s did not previously have a lead agency, instead relying on a stable of shops for project work. Old El Paso was previously handled by Bromley.

General Mills’ move to add more agencies comes after Ann Simonds took the chief marketing officer role at General Mills earlier this year, replacing Mark Addicks, who retired after a 26-year tenure at the packaged-food giant. Also playing a key role in agency decisions is Michael Fanuele, a former chief strategy officer for Fallon who joined General Mills late last year in the newly created position of chief creative officer.

Twitter Makes It Easier for Brands to Run Amplify Ads

Twitter is tweaking its Amplify program to make it easier and quicker for brands to run ads against videos certain media companies post to the social network.

As first reported by Forbes, Thursday Twitter announced a program called Auto Amplify that makes it so brands don’t have to wait on sales reps to run an Amplify campaign. The program is a new spin on Twitter’s two-year-old Amplify program that has enabled TV networks and other media companies to sell pre-roll ads against video clips uploaded to Twitter as promoted tweets.

Here’s how Auto Amplify works: A brand surveys Twitter’s library of Amplify videos and selects the one it would like to advertise against. The brand then pays Twitter to run that video as a promoted tweet with a pre-roll ad playing before the video.

Special Lanes for Ducks

Surveillance State

…the NSA’s goal is to “Collect It All,” “Process It All,” “Exploit It All,” “Partner It All,” “Sniff It All,” and “Know It All.”

by

From Adbusters #119: Manifesto For World Revolution Part 2

Twenty years ago, if the government wanted to know your most intimate secrets, it could seek to follow you around the clock.

But that is very expensive and difficult, and could be deployed only against very high-priority suspects. The government could search your home, but only if it first obtained a judicial warrant based on specific probable cause. It could interrogate you, but only if it had probable cause to arrest, and even then, you could assert your right to remain silent.

Today, the government can simply go to the various communications service providers you use and obtain from them detailed information on your every phone call, web search, e-mail, online chat, or credit card purchase, as well as your physical location whenever you are carrying your cell phone. Under current law, you have no constitutional right to object to the government obtaining the information from the companies that serve you. The government needs no probable cause or warrant to get it.

The digital age also makes possible dragnet surveillance of whole communities. 20 years ago, no government could monitor all phone calls from a single country or secretly collect the personal address books of millions of individuals. The computers were not fast enough, the hard drives not big enough, the algorithms not sophisticated enough, the world not linked enough. Today, mass collection and analysis are conducted every day by Google, Yahoo, British Telecom and many websites. And as the NSA and the GCHQ have shown, government agencies can obtain that information from the private sector virtually at will.

In the words of an NSA PowerPoint slide disclosed by Snowden, the NSA’s goal is to “Collect It All,” “Process It All,” “Exploit It All,” “Partner It All,” “Sniff It All,” and “Know It All.”
