Why Mexican Brew Montejo Is Sitting Out Cinco de Mayo

As a newly available Mexican imported beer, it seems logical that Montejo would make a big deal out of Cinco de Mayo, following in the tradition of other Mexican brews like Dos Equis and Corona. But in a calculated appeal to Hispanic consumers, the Anheuser-Busch InBev-owned brew is planning to ignore the holiday.

The reason? Cinco is largely an American phenomenon, and Montejo is trying to position itself as an authentically Mexican brew, said Ryan Garcia, A-B InBev’s VP for Montejo. Cinco “really has no true meaning to a Mexican consumer,” he said.

The brand will instead use point-of-sale marketing to celebrate the true origins of Cinco de Mayo, commemorating “El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla,” when the Mexican army defeated French troops at a battle on May 5, 1862.

Y&R Treats Longtime Employee to Trip Around the World

While job-hunting in 1965, the only thing Mary Alice Kennedy told a well-connected friend of hers was, “I just don’t want to work in an ad agency.” Things didn’t really go to plan.

After being coaxed into an interview for a researcher position at Y&R on the basis that “this place is different; it’s special,” she found the workplace chemistry she was looking for and was hired on the spot.

After 49 years with the agency, Ms. Kennedy — or MAK as she’s known in the network — retired from her job as head of global intelligence, but not without a great big thank you gift from Global Chairman and CEO David Sable.

The Violence in Wes Anderson Movies

COS Installation at the Milan Design Week

MTA bans all political ads in response to "Kill all jews" billboard

Adland reported that Judge John Koeltl ruled that the MTA had to run an ad by The American Freedom Defense Initiative that read “Killing Jews is Worship that draws us close to Allah,” as well as “That’s His Jihad. What’s yours?”. The MTA had other plans and announced on Wednesday that all political and religious ads are banned from the transit system. The new policy, which was effective immediately, was passed by the MTA board in a 9-2 vote.

“Hateful speech is not harmless speech. Only a fool or rogue would argue otherwise,” said Charles Moerdler, an MTA board member and Holocaust survivor who voted for the new policy. “Hateful speech, with its odious appeal to intolerance, is the incendiary that ignites violence and ultimately destroys free and democratic institutions.”

Pamela Geller, the woman behind the ads that the MTA really don’t want to run, had two minutes to defend her “viewpoint advertising” ads. She said: “You call my ads hateful? These are actual quotes. Why aren’t we talking about the ideology behind these quotes?”

Chris Dunn of the New York Civil Liberties Union cited the role of subways and public transportation in a New Yorkers life to argue against the political ad ban.

“The New York City transit system is our public square. It is where virtually all of us pass through day in and day out. And because of that, it is a central part of our free speech in New York City. And given our commitment to free speech in this country, it is unconscionable that you are thinking of banning political ads from the transit system. This proposal is small-minded, it’s intolerant, and it violates everything we stand for as a city and a country… If a hateful political ad runs on some buses for a few weeks and creates a controversy, we will all survive that. But if you ban all political ads in New York City, that will be a grevious blow to all of us and it will be an indeliable stain on the MTA and on the State of New York.”

As it stands now, only paid commercial advertising, public-service announcements and government messages will be allowed on the MTA. There are currently no political ads up in the subway system.

I’m not sure government messages are always apolitical, but there you go.

Lastminute.com spoofs the Protein World "Beach Body" ad

Lastminute.com declared that their beaches are ready for everybody, and also said that Life’s a beach – roll your body all over it. #BeachBodyReady – while spoofing the Protein World Beach Body ad on their social media pages yesterday. The Protein World ad has been the hot topic all week, spoofing the ad ensures that your ad will be talked about too.

This is not the first brand to join the spoofing fray, Carlsberg has also spoofed the Protein World ad asking if your Beer Body ready, which didn’t only appear in social media but also on digital billboards in the London Underground, targeted to appear next to Protein Worlds ads.

There’s also been a Dove ad floating about, but this ad was not created by Dove. A representative for Dove denied creating the ad, but stressed: “we do believe that every woman is beach body ready!”
Dove also added “In 2004, 75% of women felt advertising and media set unrealistic standards of beauty. Today, that figure is 66%, with the perception being that more diversity is portrayed in the images of women we see around us.” taking credit for the change in media portrayal of women as they launched the Dove real women campaign eleven years ago. By the way that campaign was spoofed too by Ogilvy Düsseldorf, and even banned because of nudity.

The Protein World ad campaign has run its course and is set to be replaced in a few days by another campaign. I suspect we’ll see more spoofs still though, even if the campaign has ended.
