Local Broadcasters Could Reap Billions in Airwaves Auction
Posted in: UncategorizedSmashburger’s (Unverified) CMO Has Harsh Words for Agency Haters
Posted in: UncategorizedEarlier this week, Minneapolis agency mono announced a big account win: rising Boulder-based “fast casual” chain Smashburger, or “The Starbucks of Burgers.”
The review originally involved a dozen agencies including local shop Grenadier. According to the Denver Egotist, the account had “bounced among a number of Denver agencies over the last few years,” and mono is the chain’s first AOR not located in its home state of Colorado.
Some readers took issue with that fact, and the client’s CMO Josh Kern (allegedly) fought back…in the comments, of course.
Thoughts from readers:
“Don’t let the client anywhere near the concept.”
“Assign your most junior team since the client is going to ruin everything.”
“…support this homegrown brand that ruined our concepts, fired us and then moved their ad business out-of-state.”
Kern, who credited mono with “the ability to help us tell the story of the brand as the new way to eat a burger” in the press release, then (again, allegedly) jumped in to defend the decision against these ad nativists, writing:
“Way to stay classy “anonymous” Denver Egotist followers. From the client perspective and speaking from experience, advertising in the restaurant space is not for the faint of heart. I had no idea of the venom around our brand and certainly I would hope that people living in Colorado would support a homegrown brand, most of all the creative people in Colorado. The agency talent in Colorado is spectacular and as a person working in the marketing space I wish every agency the best of luck. By the way we give free burger coupons not BOGO’s.”
The argument kept going:
“I’m really sorry you feel that way “anonymous”. If you’re genuinely offended, just call my office for a pack of free burger coupons and a signed lock of Tom’s chest hair.”
The Tom in question would be company founder Tom Ryan, seen here serving a not-burger for Thanksgiving in a 2013 image from Cyrus McCrimmon of The Denver Post.
Was this commentor the real Kern? We can’t confirm at the moment, but his passion does seem real — as does Ryan’s chest hair.
Moms Bring the Slang in Havas’ Latest for Hefty Cups
Posted in: UncategorizedHavas Worldwide Chicago launched a new campaign for Hefty cups featuring party-loving moms dropping some unexpected slang phrases.
In fact, the spots, which rolled out today on the brand’s Facebook page, seem to cram in as much modern day slang — such as “on fleek,” “turnt,” and “bae” as possible, with truly cringe-worthy results. Of course, cringe comedy was clearly what the agency was going for here, but some may question whether it succeeds at the comedy part or if it tries just a little too hard. Three spots follow the same basic formula, with an average-looking suburban mom speaking about partying it up while using some rather unexpected language, followed by the hashtag “#partyhardmoms” and metal music leading into a shot of a Hefty cup, promoted as “Now crack resistant.” While the “Party Hard” approach makes sense for the brand, that the branding doesn’t occur until the end of the ad could prove problematic, especially considering that the cringe-factor means some people will tune out well before the spot’s conclusion. The ads do deserve a little bit of credit, though, for taking a shot at the one-dimensional mom stereotypes that are still prevalent in advertising.
“Traditionally mothers are cast in one light: wholesome caregivers for their children,” Lynnette Hinch, director of marketing for Hefty Cups, told Adweek. “But the reality is moms are much more complex and multifaceted.”

Bacardi Consolidates Major Liquor Brands
Posted in: UncategorizedBacardi has decided to consolidate creative and media for its major brands, choosing BBDO and OMD without a review, Adweek reported yesterday.
According to that publication, the process began with a secret meeting between Bacardi mangement, led by CEO Mike Dolan, and executives at BBDO and OMD. Within a couple of weeks the brand had struck a deal with the two agencies to consolidate its major brands, handing off both creative and media responsibilties to the pair of Omnicom shops. Prior to the consolidation, Bacardi worked with a wide variety of agencies on its creative accounts, with media handled by Mindshare in North America and Zenith in Europe.
“Our goal is to be able to work better and to create a closer alignment between our global and local operations,” Dolan said in a statement. “To achieve this goal requires that we work with a global network.”
“It was so unique in how this happened,” OMD worldwide CEO Mainardo de Nardis told Adweek. “It wasn’t about a review, pitches, presentations, spreadsheets, pricing. We feel empowered because this is a decision based on strategic discussions about how to improve Bacardi’s business. It’s a real partnership with a huge amount of trust. If only [all new business] could be like this.”
Among Bacardi’s 200 brands are flagship brand Bacardi, Grey Goose, Martini, Bombay Sapphire, Dewars and William Lawson’s. Due to a conflict of interest, BBDO will resign from Belvedere Vodka in the U.S. and Famous Grouse in the U.K.
Grim Reaper Sings About Kids Dying in Unicef's Insane Sound of Music Parody
Posted in: Uncategorized
The hills are alive with the sound of Unicef Sweden singing about cholera.
A jolly grim reaper does a Broadway number on waterborne diseases in Forsman & Bodenfors’ insane new ad from the children’s charity. Titled “The sound of Death,” it parodies The Sound of Music—namely the song “My Favorite Things,” performed by children in the musical. But instead of whiskers on kittens and brown paper packages tied up with string, it turns out that Death loves dysentery and leptospirosis.
The clip is firmly in the Mel Brooks tradition of dark comedy (Think “The Spanish Inquisition” from History of the World, Part I, or maybe more appropriate, the Nazi-themed “Springtime for Hitler” from The Producers). And any macabre, musical PSA these days is likely to evoke, however slightly, “Dumb Ways to Die.”
Frankly, the lyrics could be better. And the extra wry approach makes the concept tough to swallow, but that’s kind of its point. It doesn’t quite trivialize the horrors it’s trying to address, it just pretends to do so, as a way to guilt viewers—essentially saying, “Enjoy this silly song … about the thousands of kids dying every day.” Whether that’s an effective call to action, who knows? It’s certainly memorable.
And at least it keeps up musical theater’s raison d’etre of having people burst into song about everything, all the time, even when it’s totally inappropriate.
