Attention is the 'New Oil': Video With 'Brain Games' Host Jason Silva

Jason Silva thinks it’s therapeutic to have your mind blown, and attempts to do so as the host for National Geographic’s Emmy-nominated TV series “Brain Games.” Mr. Silva spoke with Ad Age at Advertising Week about the misconceptions behind multi-tasking and warned content creators and consumers alike to be thoughtful about the competition for audience’s attention — otherwise known as the “new oil.”

Watch Last Night's New TV Ads From Nissan, Luvs and More

Every weekday, we bring you the Ad Age/iSpot Hot Spots, new and trending TV commercials tracked by iSpot.tv, a company that catalogs, tags and measures activity around TV ads in real time. The New Releases here ran on TV for the first time yesterday. The Most Engaging ads are showing sustained social heat, ranked by SpotShare scores reflecting the percent of digital activity associated with each one over the past week. See the methodology here.

Among the new releases, Carl’s Jr. offers up an interesting definition of the Mile High Club (Ad Age’s ad critic Ken Wheaton previewed the spot and didn’t exactly love it), while Starbucks celebrates coffeehouse culture in a charming new spot with the tagline “Meet Me at Starbucks” (Maureen Morrison has the backstory on the campaign). And Nissan invokes a child’s imagination to show how its Safety Shield technologies can keep scary things at bay.

As always, you can find out more about the making of the best commercials on TV at Ad Age’s Creativity.

F.C.C. Eliminates Its Sports Blackout Rule

The N.F.L. argued that ending the rule would endanger the availability of games on free television, but the commission said that was unlikely.

The Big Problem With Cross-Platform Measurement: No One Wants To Pay

The entire industry is clamoring for advancements in cross-platform measurement, yet no one is willing to pay for it.

That was the message during the Advertising Week panel — “Are We There Yet? The Journey from TV to Total Video” — that was eventually jokingly called a “telethon,” where researchers across media buying and selling urged the audience to support cross-platform research.

“We know how to do it, but it is really hard and expensive,” said Alan Wurtzel, president, research and development, NBC Universal. Mr. Wurtzel said the entire industry talks about the need for cross-platform measurement, but when it comes time to write a check no one is willing to support the cause.

FDL "Wholesaler" (2014) :30 (USA)

Just in time for the midterm elections, New Orleans-based FDL construction dusts off some political platitudes and turns them on their head. Because you need a contractor, not a politician.

"Ways to get into advertising" site with absurd advice

Jason Scott has made a random junk suggestion generator called Ways to get into advertising, where the advice is every hilarious stereotype you’ve ever heard about the hot shops and over-hyped ideas.
“FEDEX AKQA a giant QR code that links to your book” Good lord, no. Or: “Add Goodby on Facebook…. then say you learnt to fucking code at fucking Hyper Island, yeah? and shazam! tell Leo Burnett to fuck their fucking placement” HAHAHAHA – my sides. Stop it.

Peugeot 208 GTi "The legend continues." (2014) 1:40 (France)

All the swagger you could ever want in a car commercial. And yet it doesn’t take itself seriously. Thirty years after the Peugeot 205 GTi was introduced, Peugeot revamps it for a new version. This spot is pure eye candy and just plain fun.

MRY CEO Britton to Oversee Big Fuel

bigfuel_logo

To update our recent post on MRY‘s status in the wake of this month’s Publicis shakeup, we can confirm that founder/CEO Matt Britton will now oversee the operations of both his own agency and fellow New York shop Big Fuel. The agency founded by Avi Savar announced in 2011 that it would sell to Publicis, where it initially served as a “social media center” for Razorfish, Digitas, Zenith and Starcom).

This week Laura Desmond, CEO of the Starcom Mediavest group that now includes both MRY and Big Fuel, announced that their leaders would report to Britton, who will subsequently report to her.

The move has not been announced outside the newly expanded Starcom because it will not reportedly affect any of the services that either agency provides to clients.

While the leaders of both shops will report to Britton moving forward, they will remain operationally independent from one another. (As a reminder, one of Big Fuel’s most recent major staffing moves was the hire of former Dachis Group ECD Jon Resnik as EVP/ECD.)

Team Detroit Introduces Ford Transit

Team Detroit teamed up with production company King And Country for a new 30-second broadcast spot for Ford Transit employing a mix of 3D animation, design and live-action.

The spot introduces the new line of Ford Transit vehicles with an approach borrowed from Team Detroit’s “Rant” campaign for the Ford F150, ending with the “Built Ford Tough” tagline. “9 to 5?ers” tweaks the familiar formula to illustrate how a range of professionals who rely on their vehicles can utilize the Transit models. It was shot over the course of two days on a soundstage in Los Angeles, making use of both green screen and practical sets, including a room that was actually flooded with 3,000 gallons of water. The interiors and exteriors of the vans, meanwhile, were captured in-camera and later augmented with CG. (more…)

BBDO NY Teams Up with Tim & Eric, Jeff Goldblum for GE Lighting

BBDO New York has received a fair deal of attention for its recent work for GE, including an Emmy nomination for wistfully surreal “Childlike Imagination.” More recent spots like “Ideas are Scary” and “The Boy Who Beeps” followed in a similar tone, celebrating ideas and innovation in imaginative ways. So the agency’s fake infomercial for GE Lighting, directed by Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim (better known as Tim & Eric) and starring Jeff Goldblum, comes right out of left field.

The over two minute-long mock infomercial (mockfomercial?), entitled “Enhance Your Lighting” sees Goldblum playing “Terry Quatro, Famous Person” as he hocks the GE Link light bulb, which offers “successful guy lighting at normal guy prices.” It’s also so easy to install, you can do it while painting a portrait of yourself. It should come as no surprise that the spot is all over the place with random humor, but Goldlum plays the part perfectly and when it’s on it can be pretty funny. And while it may seem like an odd approach for the brand, especially coming off BBDO’s recent spots, it should garner some attention for the new product as the YouTube views (currently at around 115,000) inevitably pile up. Dollar Shave Club Trolled by Thousand Dollar Shave Society, for Guys Who 'Make Babies on Purpose'

There’s a certain type of gentleman who can’t be bothered with clubs. He wouldn’t be associated with anything other than a society. And if you’re the type of chap who needs some pampering, well, perhaps you’ll be willing to pay $1,000 to shave the hair off your face.

The Thousand Dollar Shave Society (a blatant troll on the Dollar Shave Club) is aimed at a different class of male who enjoys the finer things in life, like shaving utensils made of animal parts. The goal of the video below is to encourage manscapers to treat themselves to a classy evening of intentional baby making, because apparently dudes who use normal razors just aren’t ready to make babies on purpose.

What on earth is in this kit that makes it $1,000? Well, it turns out the base price is $245, but there’s an optional item called a “Stag Antler Shaving Mug” that costs $755.

So, take a look at this entertaining spot for a preposterous product.

And order at your own risk.
