Supreme Court Rejects Google's Appeal of Street-View Privacy Suit

The U.S. Supreme Court rejected an appeal by Google, leaving the company to face lawsuits accusing it of violating a federal wiretapping law by secretly collecting personal data while developing its Street View maps.

The justices left intact a federal appeals court ruling that the U.S. Wiretap Act protects the privacy of information on unencrypted in-home Wi-Fi networks.

Google, the world’s most-used Internet search engine, is accused in class-action lawsuits of gathering e-mails, user names and passwords while using a fleet of camera-equipped vehicles that drove around the country to collect images for Street View.

Apple iPhone 5s: Parenthood

Advertising Agency: TBWAMedia Arts Lab, USA

Apple Celebrates All the Ways iPhones Make You a Better Parent

Don’t worry, the future of the species is safe in Apple’s hands—just look at all the ways the iPhone can help you better take care of your kids.

With the right apps and add-ons, it’s a baby monitor, an educational aid, a thermometer and a flashlight to check for monsters under the bed. That, and much more, says a new ad from the brand.

It’s a success insofar as it does what tech ads do at their best—illustrate how products make peoples’ lives better, or at least more convenient. It also covers a lot of ground as far as variety of uses.

But it’s not particularly groundbreaking. Instead it feels like a less-streamlined version of Google Nexus 7’s camping spot from 2012. That story focused on a closer look at a single father-and-son pair. This one, more impressionistic, goes for the we-are-one-world vibe that is becoming familiar in Apple’s advertising.

Here, that includes undertones that the brand’s technology is a great unifying force at the heart of what really matters most: the children. Subtle as it may be, it does have a certain degree of power as an evolutionary sales pitch.

Strip that away, and it’s not telling us much we haven’t known for a while. Even as Apple has steadied its advertising over the past year, it’s still celebrating, if very respectably, how Apple changed the world years ago.

Anger at Facebook's Mood Manipulation Not Likely to Last

A Facebook researcher apologized after conducting an experiment that temporarily influenced what almost 700,000 readers saw on their news feeds, reviving some customers’ concerns about privacy issues.

The number of positive and negative comments that users saw on their feeds of articles and photos was altered in January 2012, according to a study published June 17 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. People shown fewer positive words were found to write more negative posts, while the reverse happened with those exposed to fewer negative terms, according to the trial of random Facebook users.

Adam Kramer, a Facebook data scientist who was among study’s authors, wrote on his Facebook page yesterday that the team was “very sorry for the way the paper described the research and any anxiety it caused.”

Ad Age Survey: How Advertisers Are Spending on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube

Advertisers are flirting more with paid ad offerings from Facebook and Twitter, but it’s a cautious courtship. Even as brands boost their social-media spend, only a relatively small portion of it is going to ads, according to a new survey of Ad Age readers.

In May, Ad Age and RBC Capital Markets jointly conducted their fifth major survey of marketer attitudes toward social media. The survey polled 1,682 executives at marketing, agency and media companies for their opinions on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, which was included for the first time. The number of responses varied for each question.

Marketers reported spending slightly more in digital and social-media channels than prior surveys. But that spending continues to be a relatively small slice overall marketing budgets.
