More Ado About Nothing: CP+B & Microsoft’s Second Ad

The second ad from Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld is above. This is the long version, though their is a 30 second cut. At one point, Gates asks: “Why are we doing this?” Jerry’s answer is that they need to connect with real people. Okay. It’s kind of cute. I’m not against this storytelling idea, but the pay-off has got to be amazing. The next ad is supposedly going to actually, you know, talk about the brand. So, we’ll see.

Social Networking And Boomers

nbc_the_more_you_know.jpg

Brandweek has written an article this morning about how Baby Boomers are enjoying social networks. Ha!

“Social networking sites [SNS] used by teenagers and young adults are also being adopted by baby boomers (aged 44-61). The findings show that 41% of baby boomers have visited social networks, such as MySpace or Facebook, and 61% have been to sites with streaming or downloadable video.”

This shouldn’t surprise anyone. Boomers are texting, using social media and sending emails from their Blackberrys. However, I was recently working with a big death star media agency on a brand launch for Boomers. They told the client that Boomers weren’t using the web; that targeting social networks was not worth it. They cited some old media studies and a new one that said that Boomers didn’t even know what social media was.

I argued. True. Most Boomers couldn’t define social media, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t using it. I showed thensome real world consumer studies that weren’t created by abstract entities. I cited observational studies of of Boomer SNS such as BOOMj and Twitter and blogs. To top it off, I had to explain to the media company that social media is NOT just made up of social networking sites.

What kind of people or should I say, ostriches, are working at some of these media and traditional agencies? The more you know, the better you can serve your clients and increase your own bottom line. Simple.

Who wants a big, juicy slice of Tootie Pie?

Tootie
I’d probably be called a pervert if I went around asking women, children and animals, “How far would you go for a Tootie Pie?” But throw it up on a site named HowFarForATootiePie.com, and it’s called “viral marketing.” Not to be confused with Pootie Tang — the man who whups ass so fast, you can write it off on your taxes — Tootie Pie Company is a Texas bakery specializing in mail-order pies. The company announced yesterday it was taking the Web by storm with its new site, offering to let “everyone get a ‘taste’ of Tootie Pie thanks to a series of videos, both scripted and submitted by fans.” So far, the pickins are slim, although there’s a lot of gold to be found in the five-minute clip of women doing shots and proclaiming their vaguely Sapphic love of hand-made pies with lines like, “Tootie Pie, I’ve waited all night to have a piece of you,” and, “Who needs a husband? I want some Tootie Pie.” Oh man, I don’t care if their logo features Kim Jong Il, I am ordering me some Tootie Pie.
